Maine

fyi, barred rocks- a boy and the 2 others are girls (check out the legs)

The next clue to the sex is to take a look at there legs. The males have a lighter coloured leg and the females have darker coloured legs. Now the good bit Cockerels have double chromosomes so the coloring is muted in the legs, they have yellow to gray on the front of the leg. The Females have darker black colored legs.
THANK YOU HOPPY!! You confirmed what I thought from my research! Well, Flacco is appropriately named then. I'm pretty sure my EE is a girl too. Good luck with your hatch! I hope to be at the CMBF mtg. on Sunday barring any bad weather.

Can someone, please, tell me what the difference is between EE's & Ameraucanas? I thought I read somewhere that U.S. Ameraucanas were not true Ameraucanas?.

I have porcelain, mille fleur and golden neck d'Uccles. I live in Temple, ME, which is near Farmington.

By the way, I made a list yesterday of what I have available to sell;

A pair of Buff Bantam cochins - from Bob Hawes - the roo is three years old, the hen is probably the same - $25 for the pair.

2 Self Blue Belgian Bearded d'Uccle Hens - a year old and laying - $20 for the pair.

One Blue Mille Fleur d'Uccle pullet - $15.00

Two pairs of Porcelain Belgian Bearded d'Uccles - cockerels and hens - $25 a pair

Two Black Bantam Cochin roosters - excellent birds - two years old - $25 each.

A number of Red or Black Bantam Cochin pullets 6 mo to 10 mo old - $15 each

I would prefer local pickup on these, but I can ship . My flock is NPIP tested.

This morning, I had a fox in the backyard checking out my girls. I was pretty creeped out by it, but they didn't seem too concerned. They are used to having dogs around. This fox lives in our neighborhood and looks quite healthy, but is rather tame. So, it took alot to get him to run away. My chickens outdoor run is a dog kennel, and I never let them free range, because we live in the city. I'm thinking that I need to learn how to shoot a gun (a quieter one that wouldn't have the BPD on my doorsteps).

definately a good plan. Are you in a no shoot zone? Foxes will not hesitate to climb over the top of a fence. Is the top of the kennel covered??

really, they climb fences? did not know.
what about an airhorn, one blast of that, they will also think twice about returning any time soon, but I like the paint ball gun better (not airsoft, the birds will eat the pellets.)

My understanding is that they'll go over a pretty high fence, and the grey fox in southern Maine will actually go up a tree. Of course, I've not seen it first hand.

EE's are mixed breeds, and Ameraucanas are their own breed. Either way, you get pretty colored eggs!

Thank you kinsey228! Looking forward to those pretty eggs!

You are correct, LazyGardener! My co-worker watched one climb over his 8 foot high pen. This was after he'd lost all of his chickens except 1 to this fox. He couldn't believe it!

Oh great.

I wondered if they would try to climb over. My fence is 6ft, I think and it is not covered but I was hoping to when the snow is gone (and my husband can work on it). Thanks, hoppy, for the paintball gun idea. I can definitely handle one of those! My husband also just put some pellets in the BB gun but are those the "pellets" you were saying that birds will eat? I worked all day, today, but my boys said there was no sign of the fox. I also alerted my neighbor to my fox problem and he was happy to keep a look out with his gun ready. Both he and his wife hunt birds. I live in an area that is right on the line of the no shoot zone. I heard that across the road is OK, but on this side is not. I was talking with our school police officer about the fox (he also has chickens and lives out in the country). His comment was, "Where I live we'd shoot it!" Suppose he means shoot it, but don't say that I mentioned it? I wonder...
