Bad news here (again)
It looks like my Orloff dreams are yet again delayed. No fertile eggs so far and the cockerel is not doing well on account of mites. Everyone has been treated with frontline so this should all die down but I wanted Orloffs darnit!

Sorry about you BLRW hatch, Hoppy. I was excited to have 2 of them in my egg assortment, but one cracked and the other is clear.

Ashandvine, I hope your rooster rebounds and you get the Orloff's you wanted. I'm still wondering if my lavender Ameraucanas ever intend to lay an egg. I had hoped to start a hatch in mid-March...

Are you having a hard time with mites too this year? I had Northern Fowl mites & feather mites and I have never had mites before, really. Was it a bad year for them? I never understood what people were complaining about...I figured they didn't know what they were talking about or werent dealing with it properly. Now I know! I have done 3 rounds of Ivermectin, one of poultry protector and two of Sevin dust. And DE too. It's rediculous!!

put on some Barry White music, maybe it will put your flock in the mood.

(sarcastically)
but on a better note, my secret hatch yielded 5 out of 6, now truly am happy.

If I crossed my barred rock/buckeye roo with my barred rock females, would the babies be sex linked at all? The roo looks like a barred rock, with a few reddish hackles.

I could be mistaken but I believe the roo would need to be the darker color of the buckeye in order to produce black sexlinks. I know I am crossing my RIR with my bard rocks to get the black sexlinks. the darker color of the roo is passed on to the girls and the boys get the light spot from the hen.

because he is barred, he carries 2 copies of the barring gene. he can only pass on one copy to his daughters. they will sexable at hatch but not because of sexlinkage. the girls will only have one copy of barring and the boys will have 2 copies which makes the boys lighter in color.
also boys have lighter colored legs for the same reason.
