Maine

Just candled the eggs. Out of 12 it appears that there are 11 developing. Only one was clear. So by this time next weekend I may be able to post pictures of some new Icelandic babies.

That cockeral does a good job. No fertilization issues with him. Glad they are developing good for you. Like I said, day 19 is the norm it seems for these to hatch:)

Sounds like everyone has lots of hatching going on!

I'm thinking I will set my eggs tomorrow. I keep delaying, waiting for more lavender Ameraucana eggs. I've got 6 now, along with plenty of Olive egger mixes and Basque eggs.

I put the sour crop hen back in the coop. I don't think she is totally out of the woods yet as far as her appetite goes, but she was so happy to be back out on the dirt. I did see her peck at the food a little, but I am delivering the kefir/monistat mix just to keep the momentum going.o

Re: mealworms. For those of you who raise your own: Where did you get your origional larvae from? I've read that some larvae sold at pet shops are treated hormonally to keep them from pupating. Any info from those of you in the know?? Also, tips re: culturing, temps, containers, feed, issues for the novice to be aware of would be appreciated.

Hi Lazy Gardener, I got mine at Pet Co. It's the Super Mealworms that are treated to keep from pupating. The normal ones will reproduce. I got a lot of my info from these BYC'ers pages. I like this first one most because it's seems to be less maintenance & very easy to follow directions--https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-raise-mealworms or https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/74575/mealworms-raising-them-the-easy-way
Temps--ranging from 65 - 100 degrees F. The optimum seems to be about 80 degrees.
Container--I use a plastic tote w/holes in the cover for airflow. I had an extra from the red wiggler farm.
Bedding--Wheat bran is recommended. I use chicken feed since I already have that!
Feed--potatoes, carrots, apples (place on a plastic lid from a butter tub or yogurt container, so the feed doesn't mold), cabbage, banana peels, most any vegetable matter.
Issues--
Apples can & do get moldy if you don't keep an eye on them.
The cabbage & banana peels are good for moisture--not sure they actually eat them.
Too much moisture can draw fungus mites. Not enough slows down the process.

Some people may develop allergies to the worms so people with asthma or breathing difficulties are recommended to wear a mask when working with them.

It does take a while to finally see worms so don't give up hope.

I dont' expect the pointy one to hatch but great if it does. I've never had much luck with skinny or smallish eggs.

I know it went by so fast... Today is day 18!!! We candled at 3, 10 14 and did a couple last night and only removed 2 So excited!!1 What is the chance of all 24 hatching since they all seem to be growing... including one of the pointy ones??

Well, bring some over already!  I don't have a truck.  I was going to ask someone local.  I guess cow farmers put it back on their fields so it  might have to be horse.

I suddenly have some more nice birds/breeds here.  I need to start doing what Noelle in Lubec does and offer hatching eggs.  I would have so many cool ones.  The Java pair is totally going to stay.  I didn't tell SO this yet but they are gorgeous birds-- mottled anything appeals to me.  I never understood the love of Hedemora or Basque up here but I have to say that they are pretty.  And holy crap do they get big fast!  The Chanteclers are definitely on my list of 'ooh la la" but that's because they look so much like the RO.  I do have an Iowa Blue pullet, a Buff Orp pullet and a Cuckoo Marans 'cockerel' who looks like a pullet to me that I plan to sell.  They are all 4 mos old.  The Buff carries the Lemon Cuckoo gene... if you are into that kind of thing pm away.

Hoppy!  I have bantam Cochins from Bob Hawes now!  Holy chicken poop!

Here are what I can offer folks for hatching eggs:
BBS Ameraucana (yes I can show egg color)
Salmon Favorelle
Russian Orloff
BC Marans  (yes I can show egg color)
Mottled Java
Partridge Chantecler
Maraduna Basque/Euskal

If anyone has a Hedemora Cock that would be helpful or if they wanted three very pretty hens to start their own flock... send me a pm.

Oh oh, and momma turkey is sitting!!  Finally!  Midget Whites here we come!

Don't forget, tomorrow is Maine Maple Sunday!

I so want some midget whites!!!!

Set some eggs in the bator today, keep your fingers crossed for me! Lf cochins, teenie tiny seramas, and some mixes from my flock.

Will be thinking of your little hen, Bucka!

Ash, did you get those chanteclers from the person on CL? I almost went and got some of those but...the timing just wasnt right for me. They are still on my bucket list though, but Ill probably go in search of white or buff. Its a cool mix youve got going!

that is it. Next year I am getting an incubator! I want to join in on this hatching.

Question: is there any indication at all to be able to sex day old EEs?

And tada! Here is the new brooder. Ready to go. I will tell you.. I HATE working with hardware cloth!

The top comes off completely and is very light so I can use it outside as a mini tractor/chick playpen.
