Maine

could it be a cicada ? we are supposed to have a bumper year of them.
Ok, not very chicken related ( ok...maybe not at all..) but I have a new bug in my garden, and I don't know exactly what it is, and if I need to be worried about it- it is making lots of holes, and sounds a bit like a bee buzzing with it flies..... here is a picture.. I wonder if it's some type of a dung beetle? and if it, or it's babies, are going to eat my veggies?

Lazy Gardener, thanks for the compliment :) I think it could have been a better picture, but you know, I was not liking the idea getting down real low and having the thing fly up on my face...yuck.

It's definitely not a cicada! I think they said they were supposed to stay north of us?

I'd let the chickens at them, but they seem to be only in my garden, and that is fenced in now, NO chickens allowed!

The duck is perfect, ash!

How big is that bug, Mainechick? It looks like a turtle! DH thinks it is a dung beetle. Is it shiny? He says he's seen them here, although it doesn't look familiar to me.

Last night we had worse frost damage than the night before, even though the plants were in the hoop house and covered in reemay. Both DH and I had to leave early, so he couldn't look at the plants until he got home at noon. By then, the hoop house was really, really hot and the plants went totally flat. He said if I had seen them I would've cried. He opened the doors and windows and plugged in the soaker hose, and by the time I got home they just looked like regular plants (albeit with black frosted sections on the leaves). A few weeks of "normal" weather and I'm sure they will bounce back. I put 12 of the tomatoes in after school. They are pathetic-looking spindly things, but at least they are out of the tiny pots.

haha! I guess it is hard to judge it's size... It's bigger than a Japanese beetle, smaller than a...hmm... june bug? It's not shiny. My first guess was dung beetle, but I have not seem them rolling any balls of dung!

We had a good frost here last night too- I'm glad I have not put anything tender out yet!

Well my day ended on a 'fun' note.

Arrived home from work at about 9 tonight. Just enough daylight left to see that three horses were on the wrong side of the fence.

. On the plus side they were as far from the road as they could get munching on the tall grass. I almost had one corralled when the other two decided to high tail it over to the neighbor's so naturally the third one took off after them. So there I was in the semi dark in the neighbor's yard with one lead rope, no halters and three horses (one being a wild Mustang). All three horses were snorting and not in the mood to stand still so I could get near them. Every time I got close one would trot or canter away. This meant the other two would follow. Then just to make things more interesting the relative staying with the neighbor's comes out demanding to know what I was doing there. Ummm. I'm the neighbor trying to catch the three horses that are in the yard? So what does she do? Goes inside to get her camera. Not help. Not even an offer to help. So now I have three agitated horses who are even more upset because there is a stranger with a camera taking flash pictures.

The others who live there did ask what they could do to help but by then the horses had decided to run back towards home. I figured it was better just to catch them by myself that way they wouldn't be as worked up. Took me another 15 minutes but I was able to get the two Iceys back in the paddock. Then there was the Mustang. Being a herd animal I knew she wouldn't stray too far from the other two. But she decided to go to the other side of the paddock where there was no gate but the fence was a bit lower where I have a temporary patch. What did she do? Instead of running away again she ended up jumping over that part of the fence to get back to her buddies. So 45 minutes after it began I had all three horses back where they belonged. I did a quick fix on where they had made their escape and fixed the patch where the Mustang had jumped the fence. Hopefully everyone will stay put tonight.

Been there and done that it is exhausting, glad you got them all back in , I have just 2 horses here . my mare likes to trot down the road when she has gotten out, very scary with traffic as most people don't seem to care. I can just imagine the camera flash and if it made noise when the pics were being taken that really helped huh....

Finally caught up after 4 days at Camp!
my paint with the bum leg, made a splint for him/her today out of polmer clay baked in the oven now he/she has a custom fitted splint . hope it helps time will tell.

pic of splint made with clay

Adorable splint, Paulajon! I would never have thought to use the clay like that!

I lost birds last night. Not due to illness. Raccoon I think. They were some of my show birds.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Ash!

So... I saved a duckling... or two. The remaining egg I put in the bator has pipped this morning. Here is the little survivor:

He is so sweet! My DD would love ducks but DH will skin me if I bring home anymore animals.

My first thought was cicada as well but I had heard they weren't coming this far north.
