Maine

The coop plan looks good, MEmama! I would think your design has sufficient ventilation.
Thanks. You have no idea how much I have thought (and most likely over thought) ventilation. When I had chickens before, they were in a large coop and there were lots of them. I figured smaller scale would be easier, but I am beginning to think I had it backwards. Temperature regulation, venting and housing seems much easier in larger scale.

I wish I had more ventilation in my coop, especially on these hot days. Today I have the people door propped open with an old screen to keep our skunk family out. Most of the chickens are outdoors anyway, but when they go in to lay an egg, it was stifling.

If you count cornish, I do.
Yes I do count Cornish. I am about to receive four Asil eggs from very cool lines. I am excited to think they might be shown here-- by the man I intend to trade them too down the line. I think they are super cool and fascinating birds BUT I don't have room or time for them as tame as they are. They are high maintenance super model chickens to me. Gorgeous but too costly in time and effort.

I might have lucked into some Orloffs from IA. In the 1920s there was a big importer and showman of Orloffs. That was a while ago but these birds are supposedly out of old sq stock and I can't think of anything else they could be... unless its all a sham of course.

The Marans chicks are growing fast and furious. I can't wait to see them chasing down bugs in the yard. They are out on grass now and tolerating it well in the shade.

I plan to eat my cornish and save maybe 1-2 for a meat bird project.

Hi! My name is Cyndi and I was just noticing the names of your girls! I have 12 buff orpingtons that are 5 weeks old and I have named 4 of them Blanche, Sophia, Rose and Dorothy!! I call all of them my golden girls, but I think I have 1 or 2 roosters not sure yet! Love reading all the posts!

Guess I should have read how to reply to a post! lol The last post I wrote was directed to MEmama and the names of her chicks! Does anyone feed their chickens organic feed? Any help on this would be deeply appreciated. I live in Gray and don't mind driving to get their feed. Not sure how much 12 chickens are gonna eat but they will also be free ranging some and eating scraps. Thanks, Cyndi

Hi Cyndi! It was my daughter's ideas to use the first names, but I had to do more, so I played around with the last names. This theme is taking over in coop design, decorating and landscaping lol.
Heart & Hand in Browfield has organic feed, but I'm sure there must be some place closer for you.

I don't feed organic but I know Longhorn in Buxton sells Green Mountain Organic feed. They don't stock much since they want to make sure the feed they sell is fresh so you usually have to order in advance. Lead time is about five days I think. Latest price on their website for layer pellets is $26.90. No idea what size the bag is though.

We picked up our new chicks the other day, and wouldn't you know it, we came home with a few more than we intended. That's what happens when you bring children to a farm!

My Wheaten Marans ended up being roosters, so we left them there. I did bring home my Welsummer and Cuckoo Marans hens, as well as a few Ameraucana and Auracanas. I love colored eggs!

We had to treat them with Sevin for lice or northern fowl mite...not sure which it was, I think we got it all, and we intend to retreat Sunday. I'm just hoping the rest of the flock doesn't get the lice as well.
