Just lost my full-time job this morning.

. All because I failed to report a concern that another employee had in a timely manner. The other employee and another one who was also informed are still employed. I was the one let go just because I waited until Monday morning to report it instead of late Friday afternoon when I found out about it. Yet there was no danger to anyone or anything. It was a concern over technique.

At least they are paying me for all my PTO time (26 days worth) and they paid me for a full 8 hours today. So far I have already applied for unemployment benefits, contacted my part-time job for more hours, applied for six or so jobs (heard back from one already), contacted a friend to see if her employer is hiring and held my emotions in check for the most part.

Someone new is laying, and I can't figure out who it is! Tiny little speckled brown egg.

Possible culprits:
Silkie
2 Easter Eggers
1 either EE or olive egger


Size wise, I'd lean towards the silkie, but the color isn't even close, is it? It seems all the other pullets were still laying much bigger than this for their first eggs (sexlinks, brahma). What do you think?

it's not a silkie egg but I'd say more likely the olive egger (being that the bird would have one parent that came from a green egg/ one came from a dark brown egg) maybe dad jumped the fence.

I agree. Blue dominant egg traits are dominant so would likely be expressive.

No turkeys today. It was the plan but I didn't get the memo about the storm. What a mess for so little snow. Everyyear people forget how to drive in snow and cause no lack of heart attacks for those people who do remember. We were SO close to rearending another car because they just stopped all of a sudden then put on their blinker. We were in the van (think big passenger not caravan) and the breaks locked up but we kept going forward. Our whole family was in the van. It was just a scarey moment. Who would take care of the poor chickens if we never came home? Would our neighbors notice in three days or five? Maybe we'd be home by then or have called someone. Most hospitals have wifi so I could still talk chicken I guess.

I tried making salt dough ornaments today. Enough said.

Forgot to add that a new layer has started up in the barn! A brown egg that is the largest pullet egg so far. I believe it came from a Welsummer and its already the size of the eggs I get from our two Comets. I am so glad to not have to buy eggs.

See, I'm not positive I *have* an olive egger. I got four birds from her, one of which she thought was an olive. But thinking back now, I think it may have been the egger/barred rock cross, which actually turned out to be a rooster. Is there a way to tell visually whether one will lay olive or blue/green?


We're going to be attempting salt dough with the kids to give grandparents this year. Any tips on what to do or not to do ashandvine?


So... I cracked open that tiny egg to see if maybe it was a fart egg? It was almost all yolk, just a small amount of white. But it was DISGUSTING. I'm not sure exactly WHAT I am even looking at here??? What is this??

Is it worms, in an egg??? That's the only thing I could think of. If so, I'm assuming I should work the entire flock, and now is as good a time as any since we're hardly getting any eggs. What would I need to get, and how do I do it? Or, if it's not worms, what is it?

I don't think that's worms, gracejr, although I admit I don't know much about these things. That almost looks like that white stuff (chalaza?) that holds the yolk in place. I attempted to embed a photo using the new mobile version of this site of someone's wormy egg. (we'll see if it worked). Maybe someone else who knows more about this will chime in.

I thought chalaza was just the two little things on the ends that holds the yolk in place? This was all through the yolk, in hte middle of it too.
