One the eggs is starting to hatch - hopefully not another singleton hatch - but very excited to see some action!

Hooray for hatching! I love watching eggs hatch. I'm looking forward to spring (even if it isn't officially winter yet).

I think my ducks have started laying eggs. IDK why I thought they would be some color other than brown. I was a little disappointed.

Well my little pipped chick did not make it - was dead this mornig having not made it pass the pipped hole. Another egg had pipped and I have done alot of research and will help if needed. The one lost was peeping and active last night trying to get out. There is a wonderful thread on here regarding Intervention and after reading through it - I will intervene rather than let die. I feel that even though we try we cannot always match mother nature.

here is my theory on silkies that don't hatch. the vaulted skull may cause the chick to get head trauma when hatching and they die. most of the ones i have lost have been vaulted skulls and that just is not what mother nature's ideal chicken looks like. it's a weakness in the animal world and it's survival of the fittest

Clover, have you tried the "dry hatch" method often talked about here on byc? We had a couple of really awful hatches before reading up and trying out this method. It has worked wonders for us with our styro bator, and saved us from broken hearts caused by poor hatches.

While in general I am a Darwinist, I also will not stand by and let an active chick struggle out of a shell because WE are the ones supplimenting oyster and coral into their diets in amounts greater than needed, thereby creating significantly hard shells. That is wonderful for us folks who don't want cracked eggs or are prone to dropping things, but not so for the chick inside attempting to hatch out.
