Maine

Quick question and a comment...not necessarily in that order. First off, I am a male and will stand up and say I my chickens are pets as well. Although I may not cry at their death, I do feel horrible and do get very sad. I also spoil my birds rotten and the thought of butchering them turns my stomach. Doubtful I will ever get to that point. It should be noted that I am an AVID hunter, and a definate man's man. Though no one has said it, chicken keeping and caring can be a man's task too!!
Now, my question. I believe I have at least one egg eating hen in my flock. I think I have narrowed it down to which one or two. Anyone have any suggestions??
I've never had an egg-eater. People talk about filling blown-out egg shells with mustard or some other nasty substance to stop this behavior, but I don't know if it works. This habit could spread through your flock, so I would try to get that bird out of there.

SCG.... I do like you very much. I suppose if the goat were very small... and drugged into silence. It would unsettle the little one too much to have it stomping and wailing in the back seat. She might also try to eat its droppings, as they look so much like chocolate covered raisins. You could more easily fit my cockerel in your car should you go fetch your own buck or sperm.

I don't know if this add is still good, I just found it on Uncle Henrys, it is for an Icelandic rooster and a Russian Orloff rooster both free.
I have followed up with this. Thank you for this thought. The seller/giver is near Ellsworth and I know that is not very near at all but maybe something will work out.

Well, I think my hubby and I have come to an agreement on chickens. We will have a small layer flock that consists of chickens that I just can't resist from swaps. (Hoppy, he told me not to come home from the swaps with all of the birds you bring.

) We (I) also want to work with Red Dorkings and Dominiques, so we will have a small flock of each of those in their own coops and runs. Thank you Ashandvine for introducing me to Red Dorkings! On another note, of those of you who have raised turkeys before, do you keep them separate from your flocks or do you let them mingle? I REALLY want to get a few turkeys this year, but I haven't settled on a breed yet. Any recommendations?

I've always let them mingle. Never had an issue with them not getting along. Nor have I had an issue with Blackhead. As for breeds I would go with any of the Heritage breeds such as Bourbon Red, Royal Palm or Midget White. Unlike the faster growing broad breasted the heritage breeds can naturally breed and don't tend to have as many health issues associated with the fast growing ones.

Speaking of turkeys there was a breeding pair of Midget Whites on Craigslist the other day. Close to me too. But of course with so much snow on the ground and more on the way I would have no place to put them other than the basement. And since I have nothing large enough to keep them in down there I can't get them. Why do people do this to me? Middle of winter and they want to re-home birds that I really want.

I keep my turkeys in with the flock, too. They get along fine with most of the birds. They do tend to chase the lower birds on the pecking order, instead of just pecking, but it's hilarious to watch my teeny showgirl "peck" a turkey and have it cower. Pecking order is strange.

Also the turkeys caused a bit of a ruckus in the coop. They fly better and are bigger and can reach things the other girls could not. They are intent on destroying the insulation in my coop on the ceiling which was uncovered in a section because it was impossible to get plywood up there without sending one of us to the ER. It wasn't a big deal because the chickens couldn't reach it. As long as your roosts are low enough and your pop hole big enough, you should be fine to have them together. Now I wouldn't keep ducks and chickens together... too much of a mess and different lifestyles.

I've had Augustina in my car. She behaved and remained continent. We were, however, only going to Chelsea, and not Lubec.

I may end up buying a buckling from that lady, if she has any nice for sale later. I'll keep you posted.

Just to add fuel to the fire one can always put a kid in a large dog crate for car travel. By kid I mean baby goat not human. Although with some of the human kind the crate idea might not be a bad idea.
