I'm kinda in the same boat as you - have two roos currently... an EE and a showgirl. I'm kinda scared to put anything from my flock into the incubator (that would also be contingent upon them actually LAYING EGGS... get to it girls). The tide has recently turned so the showgirl is beta roo... so I'm not sure I'll have anything really creepy hatch... but there's the chance he's sneaky, too. I'll be the laughingstock of the swaps if I try to sell any of my crosses from that.

hahahaha We can bring our crazy offspring to the swaps together ! I decided to work with Red Dorkings and Dominiques, so (eventually) I am going to have some GORGEOUS roos. (and hens) I am actually daring some hatching eggs again Will I ever learn?

Thanks all for the advice regarding the humidity. I don't know what I am going to do that last week. Do you actually add water every day to bump it up because this one here fluctuates overnight. I found that between paper towels and a sponge I could bring things up with warm water but keeping it up is difficult. I have a water bottle thing with a tube that fits down in the hole and sprays onto an ice cube tray that has water. SO didn't make this bator big enough for many trays. I am considering putting the old reservoir bottom from the LG into this thing and using that to increase my surface area.

Paula are you hanging the gauze out of jars or is it laying in the reservoir and then you wet the gauze? Because we are going to try to incubate turkeys and they need higher humidity I am very worried. I also need to drill some smaller holes for air circulation. I do have a fan in there to circulate the internal air but I know they need to breath as well. I have to say, broodies are very welcome here! They sure take all the worry and guess out if it...alright most of.

Had a pair of Bald Eagles fly over the yard a couple hours ago. Predator or not I never get tired of seeing birds of prey in the wild especially eagles. On the plus side they seemed intent on getting to their destination and not stop for snacks since my birds are now allowed to free range. There is so much snow in their pen that it is up to the top in most places. And part of the top also collapsed with yesterday's storm. So it was either allow them to free range until the snow melts or they would have to learn to make tunnels. At least their shelter is still usable.

We had the funniest scene in the backyard goday as a flock of 20+ turkeys came out and found the treats i had been tossing out to the chickens. They hung around for almost 2 hours, chasing each other and acting goofy. The chickens eventually came out of the coop and huddled together as they stared at the turkeys indignantly. It was fun to watch!

that's a cool idea. I thought my girlfriend was nuts when she said her husband gave the chickens buckets to lay eggs in. of course they thought they were standing on end, not on their sides.

Are those Guinea Hens checking out the boxes? We had some lavender ones out in Mariaville and I just loved them! They are so funny!

It took awhile for me to get the correct humidity acording to how dry the air is in that room. If my humidity goes to high I fold the gauze so that it covers less area and cuts down the humidity or take some of it out. I like using the gauze better than paper towels ,sponges etc I find that it holds the water better and absorbs it better and is thin and can be adjusted easier.
