Maine

I have to giggle at how much my husband has started to get into this chicken idea. It's so cute! He's started helping me find a coop (even talking about spending more money on one & it's homemade to boot) & asking me if one of the chickens can be 'his.' He already has a name picked out. And he's just full of questions that I'm happy to answer. A hobby for me is starting to turn into a hobby for us lol

nava here on byc was breeding naked necked blue laced reds. naked neck is a gene that can be added to any breed (silkies turn into showgirls)
now that I continued reading ,they came from her original birds. one note, if they are from naked neck parents but are not naked necked themselves, they don't carry the gene.

Has anyone here seen a Nacked Neck that didn't have a naked neck? Are they a specific breed or are they similar in respects to Easter Eggers? Like people just breed anything with the NN gene. I just got my BLRWs today which I have to say this guy is A-W-E-S-O-M-E! I bought 10 BLRW but he sent 20 chicks in all 16 BLRW and 4 blue/splash something or other that he said were NNs that were hatched with no naked neck! He said he sometimes get these so just threw them in for warmth. They are the absolute most sweetest chick I have every had. I have no clue about NNs as I thought they were ugly, but these are adorable! How do they lay number of eggs wise? I took a picture but need to find the cord for it.

It is so funny how they do end up caring more than they let on. My husband was more worried about my chickens being cold, this winter, than I was. Now, we have 5 chicks and I'm keeping them in a tote in our main bathroom. So, he sees them every time he goes in there and when he gets out of the shower, I know he stands there and watches them. So funny!

I even found him holding one, once.

CMBF Youth Education Program
The Central Maine Bird Fanciers will present a youth education program on Sunday, April 21st, starting at 10 a.m. This program will take place at the Evening Star Grange Hall in Washington, Maine. The Grange is located on the south side of Old Union Rd in Washington off Rte. 220.
Various educational opportunities will be offered. Katherine Newcombe will be presenting a workshop on how to prepare a bird for showing. Bob Hawes will do a talk on Junior Showmanship – what the competition consists of and how to prepare for it. Linda Blackman will give tips on how to choose the right birds for showing, and comparing poultry competitions to dog shows. She will also organize a “Recognize the Breed” contest. Small prizes will be awarded to those who participate.
Austin Brann will be there to demonstrate and do Pullorum testing. Having your flock tested is required if you are planning to show any poultry at shows or fairs this year, including the CMBF Spring Show which is slated to take place on Sunday, May 26th. If interested, bring your birds to be tested on that day. The cost is $10 for the testing.
Tailgate sales will be available on the grounds, so if you’re looking for a specific breed, many reputable breeders should be there with birds to sell. This is also a good chance to connect with experienced breeders to ask questions and get information.
The program will be followed by a pot luck dinner at noon, then a CMBF meeting at 1 p.m. All are invited to attend. You do not have to be a member of the club to participate, but membership forms will be available for anyone interested in joining. Cost for 1 year membership is $5 for a Junior member, $7 for Individual, and $10 for a family membership. Benefits include a quarterly newsletter.
This education program is available for any age, not just youngsters. For more information, contact Linda Blackman at 542-4323 or [email protected].

Random question that I feel silly asking but can you get things like heat lamps and general baby chick supplies at Metcalfs or Longhorn?

Yes to both. Longhorn is having a chick seminar this Saturday at 10. Very basic information but the Poulin rep who does it is a nice guy. If he doesn't know the answer he will find it and get back to you quickly.

Sorry you won't make it Clover. New addition all tuckered out..

And my youngest 'sneaking a snack today!
Too cute, Ash!!

I agree Dita & Dowgirl...it is funny how addicting this is even to the reluctant hubbies! My husband won't tell anyone...but I do

...that he named 3 of our first chickens. He's built them a ramp so they can get over the protective wire in front of the run door to free range. Our 3 week old chicks are in the garage so he checks on them when he leaves in the morning & when he gets home at night...reports their antics to me. Last weekend he left the radio on for them.

update going to look at a brand new 12x24 shed that got repossessed the company that builds them just got it in today. guess I might have a bigger coop than I thought.
Pretty cool!! Hope you get it!

Just last night SO asked me if I had any more 'arrivals' coming from the NNIC unit (bator). I swear he checks it almost as much as I do.

I have been asked some questions about the get together here that I can't really answer because they are general questions like, what do people want. I think a thread for people to post what they have to offer/bring and what they would bring for food would be GREAT and I have no idea how to do that.... I will try looking into it this morning.
