Hrm yeah a large dog crate would be expensive, but the play pens are usually cheap. I like the idea of an appliance box! Hinged plywood would work too.

Widget, that sounds like a whole lot of work for one person. Glad you have it nearly done.

From everything I've read and heard from others, blackhead seems to be a non-issue here.

I know the different formulas of feed, I'm just not sure which would be better for a mixed ages flock. I'm not about to build a whole new coop to keep juveniles separate until they start laying.

I feed chick starter until the youngsters go out around eight weeks and join the older birds. Then they get what everyone else gets which is layer pellets. Never had an issue.

Horse shelter is done. Well 99% done.

Just have to make sure all the bolts are tightened and rearrange the fence by it and it will be all set for the horses.

Of course as soon as I was done the sun came out.

But there was no wind to speak of so getting the top on was relatively easy. Don't think my shoulder thinks so since I somehow managed to tweak some muscles. And one of the horses decided that the mound of hay wasn't good enough for him so he decided to go through the fence into the yard.

Took me a few minutes to catch him. He certainly looked like he was enjoying himself while tolting (an Icelandic gait) at full speed around the yard.

While writing this I heard some peeping coming from the incubator. Went over to investigate and I now have a newly hatched Icelandic chick.

DIdn't even think that anyone had peeped yet.

YEAH! Mine just started also. Surprise! I wasn't expecting them either, messed up on the mental calendar. Isn't it your birthday around now??

Tomorrow. Big plans. Last day of the season for me at the airport. Hopefully I will get a text in the morning telling me not to bother to come in. Have to do laundry. Go pick up some feed for the chickens, goats and horses. Do my taxes. Yes I still haven't done those yet. Move the fence so the horses can have access to their new shelter. And after all that probably order a pizza from Mediocre Deli. I know sounds so exciting. I can just tell that everyone is jealous.

I hear ya! Maybe Flock Raiser with free choice oyster shells?

See, that's the problem. lol They have several versions. http://blueseal.com/products/poultry/ But yes, everyone gets free choice oyster shell in the coop.

I thought I had read somewhere that layer feed could stunt growth on juvies? Or something like that. Or would extra protein via sunflower/corn do the trick?

LOL! Btw how is the mediocre deli? Hubby and I used to like to crack jokes about the name. Surely they must have a story behind it! Someone's name perhaps?

Happy early birthday! I haven't been to mediocre in ages, really need to go again.

Ble Seal is a lot cheaper than purina, and closer than tsc. Right now the flock gets the home fresh extra egg, something like $4/bag cheaper than purina layer.
