I have heard that with waterfowl you need to mist the eggs, however I do not and still have great hatches.

Does anyone have any advice on hatching goose eggs? Or is it the same as hatching regular chicken eggs aside the fact that it takes 28 days. I read somewhere about cooling and misting the eggs. I would rather not change incubation methods but if misting is a for sure winning method then I would have to switch. Any thoughts?

I tried a few when I first set up the incubator, placing them one the mesh and hand turning them, I candled at a week and did not see anything so I blew them out and gave them to Hoppy to craft with. If my goose keeps laying I am going to try the same method you are talking about. I know a CMBF member that has geese, I'll call him and see if he has any words of wisdom, he has been hatching some Sebastipols. i'll post what I find out.

Everyone's posts about chicks makes me want some again I think I'll stick with what we have for now though, although we are down 2 from the 10 ladies I hoped to keep ( one to sickness this fall and one to a hawk recently) DH had to build a new nest box this past week- I think we would have been ok with just the two , but he told me he saw Gerta ( barred rock who does not like most of the other chickens) "try to peck both of Speckle's eyes out!!!" -direct quote from J... apparently Speckle ( sweet EE) wanted the same nest box. I swear he worries more about them than I do!


I got about 2 percent of what I needed to get done this weekend accomplished...still fighting a nasty spring cold...I did get a scoop of cow manure from a relative, it's got a little more grass in it than I hoped, so I put some on the garden and threw the rest on top of the compost pile. I can't complain when it's free I suppose! Chickens have been helping to spread the cow ( and their own...) manure on the garden, hoping J will till it tomorrow so I can get planting!

last thing- I have yogurt in a warm oven... trying to make soem myself here- I tried a batch last week and failed, hoping it works this time. Anyone else make yogurt without a yogurt maker??

No advice, but my first introduction to poultry keeping was in 6th grade when I got some eggs for hatching in the classroom incubator. Bantam eggs, set 4: 100% hatched, goose eggs, set 2: 0% hatched. I was removing them from bator at day 30, and one of them exploded in my hands!!! We had to evacuate the entire wing of the school for the rest of the day.

Sorry to hear about the Am chick bucka, I hope It bounces back for you.

I wound up taking the oldest chick outside his afternoon for a while, she spent the entire time hiding. Silly thing! She was very glad to come back inside.

I'm setting aside eggs for another hatch. One of my hens is on penicillin currently, is it ok to hatch her eggs? I know we can't eat them, but are they safe to hatch? For that matter, how long after stopping meds before we can eat her eggs again? She's on penicillin, plus the germicidal/fungicidal version of blukote. And did get into the medicated chick feed today. Finishing up meds tomorrow.

I haven't checked on the Ameraucana yet this morning. Kind of afraid to look, but I definitely need coffee first. I'm back to work today and not used to being up this early.

Sorry about your spring cold, Mainechick. I also feel like I only got 10% of what I wanted to do this vacation week done, although yesterday I finally got the peas and some fava beans in the ground. It is kind of wet out there. DH got the tractor stuck in an area where we are starting a new small plot. The garden itself is dry though, mostly because it had a hoop house siting on it all winter.

So far, I love the deer fencing, but from now on I think I will unroll and cut it indoors, re-rolling it as I go. The band saw did not work all that much better than the steak knife. I still have one more flock to fence, but I have just over half the fencing left, so I may have gotten carried away. I need to get fence posts to finish it up.

I got my baby ducks into the pool today, they loved it, diving and flapping and splashing, now it's the parents turn. need to turn in early tonight, migraine all day and tylenol is just not quite touching it, nausea isn't helping either.
