I got my baby ducks into the pool today, they loved it, diving and flapping and splashing, now it's the parents turn. need to turn in early tonight, migraine all day and tylenol is just not quite touching it, nausea isn't helping either.

Oh, that must have been fun to watch, Call ducks?

Hey all fellow Mainers, My family and I live in Milo, Maine.
Been raising our first batch of chickens for less than a month now but, all is going well.
Loving it all!

My Grandparents lived in Milo. What kind of chicks and how many? I'm starting the chicken thing... after several decades without them. Hatched 5, then got 3 each Araucanas, Dominiques. Still working on getting their coop finished. Getting closer every day. Having a blast with it as well.

Sorry about the migraine. That's a good way to ruin an otherwise good day. Hope you get some sleep and that takes care of it. Ducks are fun.

My sickly Ameraucana chick is still alive, but still sickly. She will eat, but does not run around like the others and still seems like her breathing is labored. Now one of the Basques looks sick to me too, but maybe I am just paranoid.

I put out some moistened feed and everyone was devouring it. Then I was counting them and one was missing. The Basque was under the Ecoglow, very sleepy. I know chicks sleep a lot, but they are a week old now and everyone else came running for the food (even the Ameraucana, although she just walks). They are on medicated feed. Not sure what is going on.

Are you giving any electrolytes, pro-biotics? I used both and Nutri-Drench when I had a chick circling the drain, and she made a remarkable recovery.

yup, call ducks. Im just amazed at how fast they grow! fully feathered out at list 4 weeks old.

Thanks lazy gardener, I kind of forgot about probiotics. I've been putting Avia Charge in their water, but I have some kefir in the refrigerator. I'll mix it into their feed tomorrow.

The Central Maine Bird Fanciers meeting today. I did well, I sat on my hands so one of them would not go up when they auctioned of two different pairs of bantams.I just have no where to put them right now.

Sorry I missed seeing you there. I brought my PC but had to leave early. There was just too much to be done. I really like the Barred Rosecomb bantams. I would have had trouble not wanting them too.

Does anyone have any advice on hatching goose eggs? Or is it the same as hatching regular chicken eggs aside the fact that it takes 28 days. I read somewhere about cooling and misting the eggs. I would rather not change incubation methods but if misting is a for sure winning method then I would have to switch. Any thoughts?

We should pm about this. You want to dry them down, do not mist them. If you are going to wet them then you just wet your fingers and then flick your fingers at them just a little. The temps need to be higher and for longer. The humidity needs to be high at the end as well and broody geese WILL help their babies out so don't fret if you have to. That's the gist. Talking with other long time breeders dry dry dry is the way.

We have an assortment of chickens, we have Cornish Rocks / Tetra-Tint / Rhode-island Reds / Leghorn.
Combined we have 34, lol.
7 of them (The cornish rocks.) will be freezer bound in around 5 weeks, these suckers grew quick!

Loving every moment of them, they sure are quick to get around, and are beginning to get vocal and some are attempting to lay claim to being head rooster/hen of the flock, lol...

But it's great, never thought I would like it so much, seems to calm me down just being around them.

Anyways be great to know if any of you northern mainers know the chicken/livestock ordinance of milo, maine, read lastnight that there doesnt seem to be one, but you never know...
