So Sorry Ash. If it was a coon, he may be back tonight. I had one decimate a flock once. Then he came back in broad day light to get the few he missed the first time.

Hey I am wondering what all you other "Mainers" think about diatomaceous earth. After reading the forums here some say they feed it to their birds, some say never to feed it to them, some say they put it in their bedding some say never do that....ALL VERY CONFUSING!!! What are you folks doing and how do you feel about it all?

PJ, I use de in my bedding in the coop. I'm not sure if it actually helps, but I figure if it doesn't hurt, why not, right?


I spent a while yesterday reading about the disease issues, and I'm so confused. Some say you can avoid it, others say you're bound to get it sooner or later no matter what. And then it sounds like the disease itself doesn't actually cause an issue, but can make it easier for secondary infections. So what is a chicken lover to do? I don't show, but I do have pullets that I'm rehoming. Do I need to be tested? If so, how do you go about it and how much does it cost? For that matter, if one is infected, are the eggs and birds still safe to consume?
