This is absolutely not chicken related in any way. But I need help tomorrow. getting to work. Limington to Westbrook. Possibly that is. The brakes on my truck failed big time on the way home last night. No accident but a very scary 15 mile ride home. Seems I have a leak somewhere around the driver's side rear tire. I can see the brake fluid dripping. Oddly enough that tends to make the brake system not want to work.

Let me tell you that the feeling one gets when one steps on the brake pedal and it goes all the way to the floor and nothing happens is one of pure terror. Thank goodness the traffic was light and downshifting allowed me to slow down. Of course there were a couple of idiots who decided to pull out in front of me.

Anyway my mechanic is coming over this afternoon to look at it but won't be able to work on it until tomorrow. With my new job I have no vacation time built up and if I don't show up it goes against me. So I really really really need to get to work. I don't have to be there until 11 but am willing to go sit in the break room for several hours if that is the only way to get to work. No idea how I will get home but that is another problem.

Annoying part is I get one heck of a discount on auto parts. But I need to get to work to fill out the order form and have my boss approve it in order to get the parts. Since I can't get to work without a vehicle I can't get the parts I need to fix the same vehicle.

That rice recipe looks good, MustardTiger!

We do a lot of Thai cooking. For anyone that has never made their own coconut milk, it is easy to do. It comes out not as thick as the canned stuff, but much sweeter and delicious flavor! Scald 6 cups of milk or water (or a mixture). Stir in 4 cups of unsweetened shredded coconut. Remove from heat. When cool, strain and squeeze through cheesecloth.

You can use it like that, or we sometimes chill it in a bowl and chip off the coconut fat to sauté the vegetables in. We freeze the coconut milk in small zip-lock bag portions for later use. The leftover strained coconut shreds we reheat in water to make "thin" coconut milk, so they get used twice.

DH has been cutting back on dairy, so now when I make coconut milk, I use the refrigerated coconut milk sold in the dairy section as the "milk" and then add the coconut.

Gracejr, I am not the most experienced hatcher, but for dry hatching I keep the humidity at 20 - 25%, and then bump it up to 70% at lockdown. I do not worry about humidity spikes during the actual hatch. It is also helpful to weigh the eggs every 5 days or so if you are worried about humidity and weight-loss during the incubation period (I weigh the whole tray, so it is easier), but this last time I didn't even bother weighing.

Still too hot to get much accomplished outside. I gave up on the fence after 45 minutes. Figured when the sweat was pouring down my face and soaking through my shirt that seeking cooler air was a good idea. I did manage to almost get the three 100 foot strands installed. I need some tape splicers so I can then take care of the 50 ft side and the 75 ft side. Also need to install three or four more T-posts on those sides and reinforce the gate. Nothing too difficult just not easy when it is 90 out.

The ducks and chickens are out free-ranging today. Or should I say free-ranging as far as underneath the truck where there is shade.

Even the horses are in the shelter trying to stay out of the sun and away from the bugs. The bee hive is in the shade so they are at least happily buzzing around foraging for pollen instead of trying to cool their house down.

Murphy did it again. Baby turkeys eat ants. They were out with me this morning, momma softly chortling to them in the grass, and the babies trying to charm me with their "swee swee swee." I was thinking, yes, you are cute but you don't do a lot to help out here. I was thinking they all looked like Simon's with their big yellow heads on long skinny necks... when jab! A baby found a big ant and carried it off to thrash in private. I am not a fan of a surplus of ants and it does seem that every other year there is a bumper crop of them. I never see chickens eat ants or spiders. Well, turkeys do, so that's 'one' more for the turkeys. Now if only momma had hatched more of them or the Poultry Co op was up to helping me create new housing for them. That momma had those babies out yesterday afternoon ranging across several acres in a short while. They are going to have some strong legs!

Merry and Pip came outside for a while this morning too. The kids really love watching them.

Yup. I was outside cleaning up the yard after yesterday's action, stopped for a few minutes to look at the bees and then thought "wow, those bees sure are agitated. And how did it get so dark?"

Weather channel says this: THIS STORM HAS A HISTORY OF PRODUCING WIDESPREAD WIND DAMAGE IN BINGHAM AND OTHER LOCATIONS. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK SHELTER NOW INSIDE A STURDY STRUCTURE AND STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS!

Stay safe, y'all.

Well the first storm went around me. Got really dark with gusty winds but no rain or T-Storm. It did cool off by about 10 degrees so that is a plus. Put the birds back into their pen so I don't have to venture out later.
