Maine

- 8here and I was bad. I didn't check the temps in the barn and didn't want to check the goose house. Oddly they are both usually 20* warmer than outside-- usually. I know the geese are staying inside today except for when I run out with fresh food-- cabbage leaves, grapes and some old cherries today. The water is freezing in moments now. Did mention that I got my first eggsicle from my Mottled Java Pullet? She is younger than some of the other birds and laying before them. Gotta love a Java.

I just noticed one of my golden comets, who is typically the most social/curious of the bunch when I enter the coop, was sitting practically on the water heater. Do any of you have chickens who do that? All of the other girls' crops felt fairly full, but hers was empty and she felt so bony. She wouldn't eat any feed or scratch, so I cooked her an egg and fed it to her separately. She gobbled it up and perked up a bit. I'll keep a close eye on her and be sure she eats plenty tomorrow. Her wattles are still a lovely red and she laid today, so I'm hoping she's alright... she can be a bully, but she has such a hilarious personality that I'd hate to lose her.

I couldn't help myself and turned the heat lamp on for 10 minutes. It's off now, though. I don't want them dependent on it.

Eggsicle here too, ash.
I actually left the chickens locked up in the coop today. -22 outside, but inside was in single digits with the pop doors closed. DH let the chickens into the run after lunch when he got home. The hoop coop does not fare as well in the overnight. It was 10 below in there this morning, - not as bad as outdoors, but not as good as the well-insulated wooden coop. The wooden coop also has many more birds in a much smaller space. I worry less about the hoop coop chickens though, because they get frequent breaks from the cold (on sunny days). It was in the 40's in there yesterday.

Congratulations on the last class, Mainechick, and good luck with your student teaching! What age group are you hoping to work with?

I thought I saw a journalist taking photos of some lady picking up clumps of grass that the snow plow left behind. Should be in tomorrow's paper.....

Bucka- Farmingdale does have a few photographers who would publish something like that- so maybe we will see coopchick in the KJ!

I'll be certified to teach special education at the elementary level.

Mainechick I graduated last May! I started college in1999! So, it took me 14 years to graduate. What college did you attend? I went to uma and various ums colleges plus temple and penn state. lol. I got my degree in Information & library sciences. I'm glad to be done! I am thinking of grad school, got accepted to a program at UMO. I think I should have gone to school for something agricultural though!
