Anyone else sweating today at 22 degrees? I had to take my jacket off.

I am taking advantage of the "heat wave" by scraping the frozen poop out of the coop. I hate making such a ruckus while my australorp is sitting (she gets her real eggs tomorrow!) but it has to be done. I lured the girls out into the outdoor area beyond the covered run by throwing out some BOSS sprouts and bread crumbs. If every day could be like this I'd be a happy camper.

I have a date with my poopsickles tomorrow when it will be much warmer after work. They're still rock solid today, and I'd be chipping them off. Granted tomorrow they're going to be a sloppy mess, but that's what a washing machine and shower is for!

It really is lovely out. I shoveled a bit more snow this morning and spread some salt in the hopes that that will help it melt tomorrow.

Did I miss what kind of eggs your broody is getting?

Yes! It's a balmy 30 degrees. I went out without a jacket and it felt down right pleasant! I'm procrastinating crawling through the pop door to the run to shovel it out before the ice. The human door is frozen solid for what I fear will be the rest of the winter. Dreading this... at least the poops are frozen. Still ick!

Told my husband how sad it was that we thought the 10 degrees out this morning felt almost warm to us!! Now it is in the 20s and feels like a summer day!

Girls are loving it!

It's warm enough today for me to order an iced coffee when I stopped at Dunkin Donuts, lol.

My chickens are faring a lot better. I think Chewbacca (the silkie) is going broody? She was sitting for a few hours today in the nesting box, and she pecked at me when I reached under her. Nothing there, but she's normally the most docile chicken I've got. Maybe this spring, I'll pop some eggs under her... I'd love to have some chicks, but I don't have anywhere to set up a brooder of my own. Chewie's raised chicks before, according to the people I bought her from, so it'd be a fun experience.

Their frostbite hasn't seemed to have gotten worse. I hope it the Bag Balm working its magic. Tomorrow, I plan on shoveling out a small part of their run so they can actually get outside, and cleaning out their poop castle, ugh. I hope I can get out of work fairly early so I can do it all while the sun's up!

Chipped poopsicles off the roost yesterday. Today they came off like you know what thru a goose. Pulled all the snow off the pen roof w/ the pushbroom--scared the girls--had to coax them back out. First time in 3 days they've been out in the pen. After leaving the pop door open for 2 days and no one venturing out decided to conserve heat and kept them in the last 2 days. Threw BOSS & corn in pen under a pile of dry leaves. Everyone was scratching away when I left them.

Same thought here. From the looks of the weather forecast for later in the week this just might be our January thaw.

My Tetra Tint roo definitely has frostbite on his comb nut not as bad as I thought it would be. The hens just a spot here and there. The ducks and geese seemed to have weathered the cold with no apparent ill effects. My one Buff Orp hen is showing signs of broodiness but there are no eggs.

Other than my basement bantams who are under a year old the chickens are going on two and three years. I have been trying to figure out what breed or breeds to take their place for egg production. Too many I like and not enough room. As much as I do like the less common, hard to find breeds I think I will stick with a few a common breed or two. Interestingly enough my $0.50 TSC Tetra Tints have been very hearty, friendly and overall really good chickens.

Beware!!!!! Chicken math is easily transferred over to goats. I somehow ended up acquiring two Nigerian Dwarf does today. Someone was moving and needed to find homes for the girls. So they are now here getting acquainted with Trinket. And I have two more youngsters that will be coming in June. I went from two goats, down to one, up to three and in a few months will have five.

I think I'd be interested in goat math, particular the nigerian dwarf kind! Let me know how they are?
