Sure sign of Spring. The tom turkey is displaying in front of the two girls today. As expected they are not impressed and are ignoring him.

Smart girls! I have seen some neck to back rubbing from the geese, a little fighting with the ducks and a lot of hissing out of the geese. I put up their breeding divisions this weekend in hopes that they will be in business soon. I should get the incubator out and test it huh?

I will be ordering on Friday or Saturday afternoon. I will pop back in here in the morning and give warning!
Let me know what you are doing would you in a pm?

I don't know how my chickens didnt get hurt by that dog! I work the weekends so this morning was first chance to check things out in day light. There are 2 places with a pile of black feathers in the backyard . Like 50 not just a handful. I dont see any injury on either black chicken. They are the fattest and the slowest of the bunch. I think I'll clean out the coop today before we get the next big storm. I'm enjoying all the talk about new chicks and such. I'm glad I was able to have chicks last year. I loved the experience but I think 6 is the perfect number for me , especially since I live in a neighborhood. Have a great day everyone!

3 out of 5 now laying! !! Woohoo!!!! Of course 4 were supposedly EE/OE but 2 are laying a tan colored egg each...maybe will get some colors out of the other 2...

Well Sheldon is now not coming as a foster. Good news is he is going to a family in MA as a foster to adopt prospect. Bad news is that Bennett, the foster that went to his forever home last Saturday, is now back with me. Had an urgent email, text and voice mail waiting for me when I got out of work today saying that he had to go tonight. Long story short something happened to their other dog, nothing to do with Bennett though, and they felt that they could not deal with both dogs. Nothing like getting out of work and having to deal with a crisis. But Bennett is home safe with me and will soon be up for adoption again.

When I was growing up we had heifers in a summer pasture every year. They had water and grass and we fed them grain and hay during the summer. One morning they were at the gate with their sides heaving, like they had been running, and three of them had shortened tails with a bloody mass. We knew right away that dogs had chased them during the night.

The next night we waited with spotlights and sure enough the dogs came back and started chasing. We chased them away by yelling at them and called the game warden. The warden arrived the next night with his spotlight and rifle. When the dogs arrived, he shot one. The others spooked and ran away. The dog that was shot turned out to be owned by the local deputy sheriff. The sheriff was warned to keep his dogs at home and had to pay my Dad for damages. Once dogs start playing a game, and tasting blood, they will often return again and again. The other two dogs did not return.

Last night I heard a bunch of coyotes howling not to far away. Now, the poor birdies have to stay in their run today. Stupid coyotes!
