Maine

Sorry to laugh at your predicament, Ash, but your word picture of the stealth bomber is WAY TOO funny!!! I also find myself wondering what I was thinking when I hatched/ordered all of these chicks. The last time I tried to figure it out, I think there are 27 of them. I'll keep one rooster... if we can tolerate the crowing. Otherwise, for layers, there are 3 Doms, 3 RCBL, 4 BSL (EE x PBR), possibly one EE x RIR, and I may hold back one Pioneer. They have really sweet personalities... perhaps it's just b/c they are so food driven.

We had our first salad from the garden tonight: Lettuce, claytonia, kale, and spinach.

Ash-- I probably would leave with chickens. I just have a hard time walking away from such cuteness!!

The bunnies are still a little jumpy, but is suppose that's normal since they probably saw their sibling taken by a hawk. Poor things, but they do like cuddling. I did find one tick on one of them. I keep checking them to see if there are more but so far so good.

I've got a few silkie eggs in the incubator along with a few sizzle and one lonely Easter egger egg. Hopefully they will hatch.

Seeking advice: My 6 x 7 tractor is complete except for the top. My current plan is to use 1/2 cattle panel across one end of it, with a 2 x 3 or 4 spanning the distance to support the front end of the cattle panel. Then, i'll need to cover the panel. I have 1" chicken wire or can use some deer fencing that I think has 1" holes. Any opinions about what would work the best? The open area between the cattle panel and the other end of the tractor will be covered by 1 or 2 lift up doors. If I keep the tractor outside of the electric net fencing, I may buy one of those cheap electric chargers and run a strand or 2 around the base and top. There's no way to make this thing truly predator proof without depending on a good jolt of electricity.

Bucka: IMO, you'll be getting plenty of exercise with your gardening and tending your flock. Give me a pile of manure and a shovel any day over a repetitive exercise program... Dow Girl, I bet you're laughing your head off just about now. Talk about the ultimate hypocrite!!!

Oh no, LG! I was just saying to another parent at school, today (who was a very fit Bangor police officer) that I don't exercise, I just tell other people to. I admit it!

Bucka, did you say you we're studying in the PTA program at KVCC? This is what happens when you've been out in the real world for about 20 years in that profession.

No PTA program for me, dowgirl (I had to look it up to see what it meant). I teach art (K - 3). Most of the time, I really like it, but it is grueling. The subject matter is fun, but I am teaching children that will turn out like you and me, along with future violent offenders, mental patients, drug addicts, perpetually jobless, and a few brilliant scientists thrown in. I think all kids have at least a fighting chance, but many of them come from a very, very difficult place. It can be heart-breaking and exhausting.
