ICI update...we are calling it the Intensive Care Incubator. One just passed away

The other is still breathing but doesn't look good.

My splayed leg and curled toes is still not walking. Taped foot and shackles it just tips over and "swims" with its wings. Had in a cup but looks like its neck is an issue now. So placed in a small dish so the others can't peck at her. She is taking the nutri-drench ok but then falls asleep. Fingers crossed!!!

The other 7 are thriving and so adorable! !!

The 8 week olds did some distant grazing with the big girls until my roo tried to mate one. She saw him coming and squatted down. Hoping thats a gd sign!!! Moved their cage out into the garage for the night and will continue to integrate them.
Good luck w/the ICI, QT!

I'm concerned about tomorrow b/c i've had to pull the battery to the fence charger to get it replaced, so they'll be all night tonight and all day tomorrow without electricity. No one will be home most of the day.
Yikes! I hope they are okay!

We have GOSLINGS!!!!!
So freakin' cute!! My daughter still wants ducks but not this year!

Hi everybody! Enjoying reading about your babies! I had asked LG about wing clipping a few weeks ago or so. I haven't done it yet but funny thing is my girls are not remembering they can fly either. Mass amnesia ? It's weird because last summer when they were 5-6 months old, I couldn't keep the white leghorns out of the trees. Low branches but taller than me and way higher than the 5 foot fence I have them enclosed in now. I've been having mixed emotions about fencing them in. I'm glad on one hand because they head right for my vegetable garden and scratch scratch scratch ! And peck and decimate. So thats out. But I miss letting them free range. So my compromise is I'm letting them out for an hour or so in the evening before sundown. I have to have the hose in hand to scare them out of the garden once they hop in. So I water everything for that hour. And I have to keep a good eye out because its the time of day I have seen foxes in the past. Have been enjoying working in the yard. I love June!

No losses today, but i had 3 losses last night. I had 4 gold fish in a bucket on the front steps, and came home to find that there was only one left. The other 3 had been scared out of the water and were dried up on the ground. I'm sure that Rocky was responsible for this. He has got to go. He also got into the run last night, and ate some cat food that i had put out for the chickens. Unfortunately they didn't eat it before they went to bed. I now have a new battery hooked up. Chicks flew the fence today, and i found half a dozen of them out when i got home, luckily, it appears that they are all accounted for. But one got into the garden and broke the top off one of my tomatoes. Luckily, that appears to be all the damage she did. Tomorrow, I'll get the scissors out. Feel more willing to commit to clipping now that i have a reliable battery.

Not sure about leghorns as they are pretty light but I have found that, with dual purpose pullets, they fly more as "teens" than as mature hens. They get heavier and it is more difficult to get off the ground! In the past, I've had more luck clipping just one wing (it seems to throw off their balance and "steering".

Sorry QT!

So today DH, the man who says I spend too much time w/the chickens, let's the big girls when he gets home from then texts me "Where are you? I have to leave (for 2nd job) and the girls are out." I was just leaving work--15 minutes away so not too bad. I just don't comfortable leaving them unsupervised after seeing Rocky last week then finding what I'm pretty sure was fox fur behind coop this week. Hoping to let chicks out this weekend for some free ranging.

Coopchick~ That looks like fox fur to me.

SuzMeChicks~ I also feel bad for my penned in birds. So, I've been letting them out in the evening as well! They have still managed to destroy some of my garden but not as bad as letting them free range all day.

What do you think, @Jazor? Fox fur? Found behind the coop near some teeny, tiny poop.

Certainly looks redfox to me, although the lighting could be fooling me. Dont rule out a coyote, they range in colors. I'd also be concerned as to why it lost the fur. Was that caught on a fence? A fox with a bad case of mange could really go nuts and end up being a danger to humans as well as animals. Did you photo the droppings? Sounds silly to think of, but could help ID the sneak.
