As far as roos go as soon as chicks are sexed out will sell all roos from that batch since dont want to breed too closely related birds already have two roos for breeding and when my incubated eggs hatch will keep a roo from that line ordered from David Grote will have three lines from diff breeders so will have wide spreed gene pool

Got rain? My chickies look like drowned rats. But, after doing an orchard tour, I'm pretty pleased at how well the BTE system is working for my newly planted trees. They're in a less than optimal spot, heavy clay subsoil, very rocky, high water table. All the things that one should NOT have in an orchard. The sections that have the heavy mulch have NO standing water. While the sections that have yet to be mulched have deep puddles, and take a long time to drain. Of course, there is still water in and under the mulch, but, I'm thinking that it will go a long ways to modifying the amount of water underneath. My old garden was heavy clay, and when I started using mulch year round, it was much easier to work much easier in the season. Hoping BTE will do the same for my trees. They have also put on some nice growth with beautiful green leaves.

Just wanted to say hi to everyone. And I enjoyed trying to catch up. I got a new phone in June and could not for the life of me sign onto this site. I tried everything. I guess I finally figured it out. Just as a refresher, I was down to 2 leg horns earlier this summer having sent some ardent egg eaters to freezer heaven. One of my leg horns mysteriously died a couple months ago. But my 4 babies-2 Barred Rock and 2 Golden Reds are maturing and starting to lay eggs. The eggs are so small compared to what I was used to in the past. One was as big as my thumb.the eggs will probably get bigger as they get older? I don't remember this from my first flock. Anyway it's nice to talk to others who have chickens.

Hey, Suz. Welcome back. I LOVE those little pullet eggs. My girls are giving me a nice assortment of colors. I just started giving them supplemental light this week, and am now finding eggs on the floor under the perch in the morning. They're a bit confused with the adjustment of day length! But... they'll settle down soon. I'm getting 9 - 11 eggs/day from 20 players (or is that layers?)

So they are officially called pullets at this age? The first one was laying in the corner on the floor. She went so far as to pull all the hay out of the nest boxes and made a nest on the floor. I had to get the eggs with a rake. Then after a long talk and a couple of days of moving the eggs up to the nest boxes they got the idea. Thank goodness. I'm putting in a new window to help maximize sunlight in the winter. I usually have a lamp on all the time. Hopefully I will get the winterization projects done before it snows!!!

Female chickens are called pullets until they are a year old. Don't ask me why. Some one decided that's the way it should be. Males are called cockrels for the same length of time. My girls have gone renegade on me. I found 12 pullet eggs in the flower bed this morning. The gal who was sitting on them was NOT at all happy when I disturbed her. She cussed me out big time, and would have taken off a finger or two if I wasn't wearing gloves. Mama Dom wants to be laying there as well, even after I took all the eggs away. She may be the ring leader.
