Maine

Been away from BYC for a few months, so I wouldn't be as devastated about renting a place from a landlord that said no to chickens. But, on a positive note....we're going to put an offer on a house that's nice and rural.

Congrats collie1470!! Best wishes!!

Good for you Collie.  Have you checked to be sure it's zoned for chickens/farm animals?  Cause, we all know that chickens are gateway animals.

I have a Blue Pure Ameraucana Rooster to give away- free to a good home. He is 17 weeks old tomorrow, not crowing yet. Decent personality, not friendly, but not aggressive.

This was him a couple of weeks ago. Don't mind the bum of the Speckled Sussex next to him.

Gateway animals for sure! I found my easter egger chicken dead this morning. There didny seem to be any foul play and my other four chickens were fine. Im super sad in my five years raising chickens I have never had to see a dead one (we once lost one to predators in our first five months our chickens are free range). Its my thought that she lost her footing on their "perch". They choose to perch in the rafter even though we have safe level perches. She will be missed for sure.

@justinelee

I know it's always heartbreaking to lose one when you can't find a reason. Sometimes it just happens, sadly. We had that with a silkie chick this year.

I know you were interested in a buff, so I'm going to attach some pics of my young flock for you in the meantime.

Since you guys have been raising chickens way longer then I have. I want to add more chicks this spring. I know people say 4 square feet per bird in the coop. My coop is 8x12. I have 10 girls now. They have full floor space. How many more could I possibly get? Without many over crowding issues. Chicken math is kicking in!

Diana, it depends... that's the answer. Do you have a big run? Do you let the birds out all the time first thing in the morning when they get up... or do they stay cooped up for hours or days at a time? If they're just sleeping in there or in during a blizzard, you can have more. If they're in there more often, you need less birds and more space.

If anyone wants a few 1 year old golden cuckoo Marans hens this spring, let me know. Assuming I hatch a few more, I'll need to thin out the flock some. Chicken math does become a problem after a while!
