I went out to collect eggs today and i had 1 egg with NO eggshell it was an unbroken egyoke and all but no shell anywhere?
not even any crumbs of a shell

anyone ever have this happen? is my chicken playing hudinie? tricks

I've gotten several over the past 3 years. Egg went through the process too fast? missed getting a shell put on. My girls have really good strong membranes and I've had whole shell-less eggs just quivering in the nest box or on the floor of the coop.
If you had no membrane, I would guess your hens had eaten the shell and just hadn't gotten to the yolk when you spotted it. Or the shell was missing and the membrane was very thin.

Egg laying is picking up like crazy here. I'm just beginning to collect eggs for a hatch (even though I tried to convince myself not to hatch this year). Maybe I can keep it small. This winter, we tried eating our first old hen from the freezer, and it was delicious. The pressure cooker seems to make anything tender. I feel better knowing that if I can't sell my excess year old GCMs, they will make a fine dinner.

Oldfartfarmer, did the egg have a membrane? My chickens have laid all kinds of weird eggs (although if there was no membrane, mine would have devoured it!).

I'm probably going to avoid hatching this year. I try to hatch in winter that way they're out of the house by the time it's seed starting season. I do a small turkey hatch later in the year for birds for the freezer... but I had a bad year. I couldn't get my head out of my butt to incubate and hatch 3 months ago and I have 2 turkeys in the freezer from last year that we just never did anything with. I cancelled Thanksgiving and never felt like having it. So... I don't need to hatch this year. I did eat the turkey egg this morning to look for fertility for Widget... and they were fertile. Widget, how many are you looking for and when?

A friend is looking for australorps. Anyone have eggs or chicks or birds?

My egg count is picking up well now also. I'm getting 17/24. I have one old gal who needs to be culled. The first one I ever hatched.

(not counting the ones I had when I was 12 years old!) I'm really gonna hate to see her go. I plan to give her to a family who can use the protein. That way I won't have to do the deed. I plan to hatch, just because I want to get an other generation of Jack's chicks on the ground. (Just in case his potency declines next year) Also getting 2 batches of shipped eggs. My eggs will be used for an other gender selection hatch.

I was thinking at least six or so. More would be nice but I don't want to be greedy. They would be the only eggs in the incubator so there would be plenty of room.

why do my chickens cross the road?
I've got 6 comets, and this last week I've called them back from being across the road,,its getting to be a habit and I'm getting tired of it,
there gonna become road rash,,
GAWD THERE STUPID,,,I've got 5 arcers and they just mosey down the driveway and off they go
comedy but i swear they look both ways before they hop/fly over to the other side,

what can i do? cook em?

I was going to get 6-MORE chicken Buff Bramas,, but now I'm waiting because i don't want these to train the new ones about crossing the road
and my G?F is VERY much a tree hugger so putting them down isn't an option

How far is their coop from the road? What's so fantastic about the other side - better grass? Bird feeder? What happened to your fence?
