I agree.  I'm trying to train my puppy to chickens and even my 5 y.o. cat.  This puppy has "must chase" hardwired into her mentality.  I'm not sure if I'll ever get her trained, or if my chickens will be destined to spend the rest of their lives shuffling back and forth between dog out/chickens in, chickens out/dog in life style.  I certainly hope not, as that's not what I envisioned when I got this pup.
dont give up on the dog I have three bird hunting dogs and they do ok with the chickens I dont leave them alone and keep my eyes on them but can free range chickens and have the dogs out with me no casualities yet in two years

I am dealing with training daughters puppy to not view my chickens as her play thing. Good luckk and feel free to give me any thing you have found that works.

Hi all, It has been quite some time since I posted on this thread. I used to live in the Standish, Me area when I posted here. Now we live in Western Maine (Albany Township). I have 3 incubators running and a house full of other critters (dogs/cats/turtle and teenagers) In the yard we also have alpacas that we have had less than a year. Getting ready to get our garden going as soon as the weather cooperates and stops being too cold for planting.

Welcome Wabbit!
We just got our peas in this week, about a week early for us. Onion transplants will go out soon.

My tiny hatch is winding down. All 8 fertile eggs hatched, one of them just this morning. The late hatcher looks weak, but I think it might be fine. All the others hatched at least a day ago, so comparatively, they look big and fluffy. So glad I'll be able to pull them out of there this afternoon.

Thanks. Any tips? I'm thinking of getting her an electronic collar to train her to the yard. She's certainly a hand full at this time.

Welcome to BYC, and the Maine thread, Wabbit! I have 2 shipments of hatched eggs, one gender selected batch of my own, and a lone turkey poult due to hatch in the next week.

The orpingtons are growing like little weeds. They're 5 weeks old now....and we have six 4 day old silkies now too. Hoping to have a nice, sociable flock lol. The BOs already run over if I call them

It's going to be hard choosing which boy to keep, though. My favorite is one of the smallest...but slower growing isn't really what we're wanting to have passed on. Sigh. He's such a doll, though.

I ordered 8 Buff Orpingtons today from Paris Farmers Union I will have them in June. Started building our coop with my son this last week hope to get it mostly build while the kids have vacation next week. 8x8 coop hoping I have enough reclaimed wood and I only need to get roofing material.

I started with a long lead left attached to the dog and every time I saw one start to chase a chicken I grabbed lead gave good tug and gave command "leave it" after a while switched lead to shock collar and same thing but have to be consistant didnt take long for them to figure it out
