hey guys haven't been on in a while. Yesterday before the negative 25 degree weather, I covered up all the wire windows, and locked all the chickens and ducks in for the winter. My ducks are finally laying eggs. Getting 2 a day from my blue swedish and black swedish, they may be fertile from my khaki campbell ducks if anyone wants to buy some or eat them or something pm me. Also my chickens started laying again! Might be because of the heatlamps and being secure!!!

I NEED A ROOSTER!!!

anyone know what might be wrong with my americauna? she is staying in the coop all day, keeps her body shrugged in as if she is cold and has what looks to be diarrhea all over her but. My daughter is worried that her favorite hen is dying.

When my white leghon acted like that she was egg bound..I though she had loose stools and she was all puffed up..not acting like herself..I held her and she had liquid oozing out of her vent..I brought her inside...placed her a warm bath making sure her vent was in te water..let her soak for approx 45 minutes..warmed her up..and she passed the broken egg along with ALOT of backed up stool...now she is great! thanks everyone, she seemed ok today, out running amuck with the rest of the flock, her "diarrhea" seems to have stopped from what i could tell. Still haven't gotten more eggs from her yet but i might try that warm bath tomorrow it certainly couldn't hurt.

Broody and frostbite.

Despite Vaseline, my rooster's frostbite keeps growing. He and all the hens free range and I hate to shut them in. He's the only one with black tips on his comb.

But on a happier note I have a hen that is showing signs of broodiness. I've never had a broody hen before and am not sure what I should do. She sat for 3 days and then left the eggs (or was forced out?) I had put 4 warm ones under her on a whim just to see what she would do. She fluffed her feathers, turned the eggs, was super cute! After she let them she sat on the roost for a day. Then was outside for a day acting normal, and now yesterday and today is back in an empty box acting all broody again, fluffing her feathers, squatting back down when I try to lift her and refusing to leave the box. So, should I bring her in the house and give her a box to brood a few eggs so she can get this out of her system or should I just leave her in an empty box?

ok, i have located a new roo, so my lavender orpington needs to find a new home, asking a reasonable price, I have eggs that he sired that are due to hatch next week. pm me if interested

I'd agree with Hoppy, she doesn't seem really invested in being broody. I wouldn't give her eggs until she was more reliable. She could also be eggbound, sitting on the nest that long. If she's really broody and you really want her to hatch is there any way you can "box" her in and see if she's more comfortable without being bothered? You'd have to unbox her at least once a day and let her get off the nest to stretch and eat and poop. You can do this with a cage or find a way to box her in a specific nest.

I've had broodies hatch out in horrid cold weather in the coop and still have all the hatched chicks survive cause mom keeps them warm. I kept them (mom and babies) in a cage in the coop (no heat lamp) until the babies were about 2-3 weeks old, then they went into general population with everyone else, returning at night to the cage. I didn't have any problems with that mom, she was assertive and kept her babies protected. However, I've had a few other moms that didn't protect their babies well and the other hens killed the chicks when they were let out of the cage, so you do need to be careful.
