Maine

wow! I hibernate for a little bit and the ENTIRE site has changed!!! It looks so great, I can't wait to explore it a bit.

How is everyone and their birds?

Can I just tell you all how much I am in love with my little sizzle roo I got from hoppy? What spunk that fella has. He makes me laugh every morning!

I am looking forward to the spring when I can add a few hens to the flock...hopefully a bit of variety. Maybe an EE or 2, a cochin or 2, and of course if hoppy has any little sizzle girls, how could I say no??

Look how happy "George" (bantam cochin rooster) looks after his bath yesterday.

He's upstairs in the "Chick Room" drying out completely before he goes back outdoors.

Too bad he had to start crowing at 3 am this morning

I just went out and checked on my chickens (again), and my Wyandotte banty was in a nesting box WITH my Buff Orpington.

How in the world did they both fit w/out my banty getting squished ?

When the warmer weather and more daylight hours arrive, you will be blessed with eggs incubated by those banties!

Folks at swaps seem to want mostly large fowl egg layers.
But broody bantams are a way to hatch eggs WITHOUT spending money on an incubator and the electricity it takes to heat the incubator for 21 days

I really, really need to get me some broody bantams. A pair. You all are making me very jealous with all your hatching!

I am also in the market for a used shed I can renovate for my mixed flock.
I have plans to build one, but if I can find a shed in okay shape & just fix it up, that would make my life easier. If anyone happens to have one for sale, or trade, I have some strong guys with big trucks who owe me favors.

I don't have a used shed, but we are thinking of adding one of these semi-portable houses : https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/172799/our-hoop-house-chicken-tractor/120. (post 122)

It seems like a fairly cheap option, depending on what percentage of the structure you use hardware cloth on (opinions seem to vary).

I also saw a nice coop someone made by finding a shipping crate for a piano on Craigslist.
Good luck with your project!

Hello, fellow Mainers.

I'm looking to buy a couple of LF pullets or young laying hens, of some cold-hardy breed. (I'm pretty open minded.)

Is anybody around here selling at this time of year? I'd rather not risk shipping if at all possible.
