(And that is a VERY handsome rooster.)

Don't know much about computers. Used "Start a New Thread". Thought it would go here. Don't Know where it went. Any way I got my first egg today! I have 5 RIR and 1 BO. Hope to get more breeds this summer.

hi everyone,
looks like the comb on my roo got some pretty nasty frostbite. do you know what i should/can do for him? hes got a few tips that have turned black. he doesnt seem bothered by it at all, but I know how miserable i have felt with frostbite and don't want him suffering.

thanks all!

vasaline on the comb will prevent frostbite but what he already has will dry up and fall off, there is no saving anything that has turned black.
welcome mom 555, hope to see you at the swaps this spring.

Thanks hoppy! i will try to get everyone some vaseline today. i thought i was really prepared with them for winter, i never even thought about the possibility of frostbite.
Winter has always been my favorite season, and I am very glad that it has finally arrived! I will take the cold over the heat of summer any day! But this weekend I havenfound myself getting really excited for spring! i can't wait to try out our second attempt at gardening and to add some more chickens to our flock and we are most likely going to try our hand at a few meaties. If anyone here has experience with any of those, i would gladly take any advice you have to offer.

my experience with meaties, they eat alot and poop twice as much and don't move around much so having a separate area for them is best. generally if yo go with the hatchery cornish crosses, they are market weight at 8 weeks and your regular chicks will not be ready for several more weeks depending on breed.
