They sure do eat & poop ALOT
sickbyc.gif

I raised a bunch last year. Got them from Farmers Union. I had them in a corner of the barn at first and as they grew they got more crowded and the poop just piled up. I was so glad when I took them to Greaneys to be "processed".

If I was to do it again, I'd put them in a separate coop at night with outdoor fencing that I could expand as they needed more room to graze during the day.
my experience with meaties, they eat alot and poop twice as much and don't move around much so having a separate area for them is best. generally if yo go with the hatchery cornish crosses, they are market weight at 8 weeks and your regular chicks will not be ready for several more weeks depending on breed.

hi everyone,
looks like the comb on my roo got some pretty nasty frostbite. do you know what i should/can do for him? hes got a few tips that have turned black. he doesnt seem bothered by it at all, but I know how miserable i have felt with frostbite and don't want him suffering.

thanks all!

Good luck & hopefully it works out okay!

My guy has, what looks like, the start of frostbite on the bottom of his very large waddles. It looks dry & almost white - but it could also be "dust" from the layer mash...he gets right into his eating!
Anyway...as much as I adore him, and what he does for my girls - he is ALL rooster, and there is NO way I'm going to attempt getting that close to him!! Nothing has turned black, and I just can't imagine it's frostbite since they have been inside during all this below zero weather. [Really appreciating the 40's today so that everyone can really stretch their legs!]

Hoppy ~ That Lavendar Roo is GORGEOUS! (So is the pretty little thing standing right in front of him!) I drool over all the color options there are and can't wait until my flock really has some color!

New coop plans in the works for next year (yes, I have to wait a whole 365+ days) and then things should REALLY get interesting around here!!

Sorry to get of subject, but I have an egg bound Golden Comet at the moment. I have already soaked her in a nice very warm bath (yesterday and today), and she is staying in the extra brooder next to my chickies. Is there anything else I can do to help her ?

@kinsey - I think you're doing all you can right now. But this will bump for more suggestions anyway.

On another random side note... It looks like I'll be getting rid of one or two of my black silkie males. They are outnumbering my females and I don't want any of the females to get abused too much so it's better to be safe than sorry. I'll be doing some travelling through the state during March and April so if anyone would like one or two males, let me know and I'll meet you where ever you'd like.
They are both friendly, healthy and hatched out at the end of July so they are just starting to mature.
I love them to death but there are just too many boys...
PM me if interested :)

My Golden Comet hasn't passed the egg yet and is getting worse. Does anyone have any ideas that may help ?
So sorry!

I've never had to deal with this personally, but other than the 30 minute warm baths, I've read you can try to reach in and break the egg to see if it will pass, after which the hen will need antibiotics.
Good luck with her!

kinsey, sorry to hear of your eggbinding issues. hopefully things will be ok, you're doing what you can. well I finally got my new rooster, I think he's pretty handsome. can't wait to be able to put him in the girls. he's from the south and our temps are not what he's used to so for now, he will just be making visits but not until I get my other roosters out of the pen and moved. (he's a black wyandotte)
