Maine

Hi all. I'm in Westbrook and was wondering your thoughts on insulating coops for the winter. Is it needed in this part of the State? If so, suggestions on what to use would be great. This is our first time with chicks and some friends think I'm "babying" them too much. We have three buff Orpingtons and three Barred Rock. Please help.

Hi again folks,
I am excited to say that my husband and I are getting our first ever chickens tomorrow!

3 buff orpingtons and 3 easter eggers from empire acres.

*so exicted*!!

and now to train the puppy not to chase them! :)

Those are cold hard breeds,I live even further up north than you and my coop is insulated, but that was my choice becasue I have silkies in one part and my orpingtons in the other.Drafts are the thing that you need to worry about. If it is draft free than you should be ok.You do need ventilation up near the ceiling to get rid of the excess humidity in the winter. My coop

In case anyone missed the thread in the other forum, we are gearing up for our first Farm Days at the TSC in Windham July 7th! I would post the link, but every time I try I crash the site on my computer

Mine isn't. And last winter the chickens spent more time out and about than they did in the coop. They usually went in at night but not all the time. The ducks never used it as far as I could tell. This coming winter will probably be the same way. As long as they have a way to get out of the worst weather and the coop has good air circulation they should be fine. Another way to think of it is that wild birds survive our winters without an insulated coop and they have to search for their food so our chickens really have it easy. :)

I ended up using a shock collar, much as I don't like them to stop my dog. he killed all of last yrs juv birds that I had held back and only would do it if he was outside and I was in the house. I need him around the coop to ward off weasels. be firm, very firm!

Hey Mustardtiger, I'm getting 3 buff orpingtons and 2 barred rocks from them on sunday! I've got 5 here already ( 3 EEs and 2 white rocks) which we raised from a day old. We had 6, but one did not make it...and I thought I should replace her with 5 more...!

Our coop finally has a roof....and a door...just need to get something to cover the windows and we will be pretty much good to go...we better be atleast, because there is not room for an extra 5 chickens in the brooder!

Hello again Mainers. My cousin is looking to rehome his not-so-friendly rooster. He has two young daughters and he's concerned about the roo's aggressiveness. Any suggestions? The roo is a one year old RI Red. Thanks.
