We'll be doing a few (I think only 3-4) roosters this weekend and maybe a duck. Probably tomorrow, although I may be convinced to go to the Augusta swap again to get rid of the girls and thus it would be Sunday.

Thought I'd post this if anyone wants to watch/learn/participate in home butchering.

I'm also looking for someone in the Augusta/Waterville area that would do something similar to teach me how to can. Anyone??

The guy we are taking our meaties to is in Levant and from what it sounds like he would let us watch the process to learn how he does it (one day we may but for a few years we are just going to have him do the processing for us -- with 3 small girls in the house the thought of processing broilers in our backyard is daunting, once they are grown and able to handle it better we may start though). I can pass his number on to you perhaps he would be willing to show you. We show up with our birds he processes them for us and we take them home in a cooler of ice (which I prefer that way we can let them rest for a few days before we freeze them).

Thing is, we should all get old and sing like Stevie..... and have the bank account and real estate that Stevie has.....and have had the men that Stevie has had...and have the pleasure to easily dump them.

Unfortunately, that is not something that is likely to happen in MAINE.
 
I got good news, this old gal is going to the concert, but not tonight, I'm going to the boston show, so much closer to home and not as much money to spend just getting there
and I get to go to the swap tomorrow in augusta,even better.

I can't make the swap today in Augusta, but I have two goats for sale, a mother/son pair of horned elf-ear La Mancha grades, unpapered but eligible for Registry By Appearance with the IDGA. Tested CAE/Johnes/CL free in late 2011, herd has been closed since then. Mom Juniper is currently in milk, baby boy Rue was born 4/29 and has not yet been wethered (we nursed him through a bout of Joint Ill last month, but he has completely recovered and we are waiting for the banding tool to come in the mail. We can leave him intact if you'd like to breed him, but there are much better bucks out there). Baby Rue is with mom 24/7 right now, so she is not putting much into the pail but I am getting 1/2 gallon a day from her twin sister, both first fresheners so next year she should give a LOT of milk!

Junie is a lovely goat, and Rue is a very sweet baby, but Juniper will not accept her sister in the same pen, and I can't keep them separated long-term. I just don't have the facilities to keep multiple herds, and our landlord won't let us build another barn (we've already built several pastures, coops, and sheds, he thinks enough is enough!) so one of them has to go. We had intended to raise Rue for the freezer, but he's learned to sneak milk off my other milking doe and I don't have a place to separate him for forced weaning (or the time and energy to build him an in-pen latching enclosure)...so I am getting rid of them as a pair. I would love to keep them, but with my facilities challenges and upcoming wedding (aaagh! planning!) I just don't have time or energy to work on my landlord about building another area for them, much less build another barn and pen!

Juniper would make an excellent home milker, she has been milked by hand and machine and tolerates both well. Once Rue is wethered he will be an excellent companion to his mom - great brush control, he has a heck of an appetite! Asking $250, however the ideal would be to trade for another large-breed doe in milk or doe-and-kid pair - you can't have just one goat and I'd hate for Buttercup to get horribly lonely while I search for a new friend for her. I would also consider partial or full trades for one or two weaned doelings of larger dairy breeds. I'm not hugely partial to Nubians, only because of the noise I've experienced with them, but I understand that quiet ones DO exist...I already have one plenty noisy nanny goat (not Juniper, Junie never makes a sound unless something is very wrong), so strong preference will be given to quiet individuals!
