ask at your butcher, mine has some he lets people borrow. that would save you having to buy one or losing it in the shuffle (or I have wire cages 2x2x3 that I send mine to the butcher in)$20 each and will hold about 10 birds.

Also, does anyone know if their are places that sell those plastic transport crates for poultry locally, or should we just order on-line? DH is refusing to take birds to the butcher in our makeshift cages, after our Gardiner escapee incident.

Do yours go in a coop at night? All I do is go in in the morning, don't let them out and do them one by one. Once they're wormed I throw them out of the coop, that way I know who's been done and who hasn't been done. If yours aren't in a coop, then it's going to be a nightmare to catch them all unless we do it at night.

And I'm not afraid of no stinkin' roosters. Maybe I'll meet yours and change my mind, or maybe I'll invite him on a little trip to Gardiner.

I don't usually work the weekends, so those are good, and I *may* be on vacation the week after next (the 16th). My sister was supposed to bring her kids and come visit, but she's flaking out (as expected). I'm wondering whether I should take the week off regardless, whether I should suck it up and go to her or whether I should just work it because I'll feel guilty about not working anyway...

Mine do go in the coop. The run is so secure that I always leave the pop doors open, but I could close them the previous night, if I were planning to treat them.

I'm not working for the summer, so I'm flexible. This weekend is chickenstock.

I don't know why I am afraid of my rooster. He is very sweet, but I can't get anywhere near him and he is big. In fact, I am practicing picking up my favorite young roosters everyday, while they are not intimidating, in hopes that I won't be skittish with them later.

When we dusted all of our birds with DE, we went to get the rooster in the early evening, not really dark. Jack grabbed him and he screamed bloody murder and got away. He ran round and round the run, screaming like we had chopped his head off. I felt bad for him. We decided to just let him take care of his own mites!

Thanks hoppy. I just found out from a fellow Albionite about the cage borrowing system. I haven't checked Agway yet. I like the idea of those plastic cages because you can hose them out, and they are only 10" tall, so there is less room for the rooster to explode out of the cage (which is how they escaped before).

We don't have much going on here - in the way of predators or diseases - so hopefully everyone pulls through!

Love seeing everyone's pictures - even the goats!! Hubby had talked about getting some - eventually, but we know NOTHING about taking care of them!!

Time's running out for our BLRW Rooster. He has until this weekend to find a new home. I don't think I can be home to watch the "event" take place, if it comes to that. Crazy how attached we can get!

WHy mow when the chickens like to eat the grass that's gone to seed??? Husband might be a little mad when he comes home....I'll do it later. And to you people with goats...I am jealous! I'd love some....nigerian dwarfs. SOMEDAY!

Gah I am jealous of the goat setups too. I am already overwhelmed with a first home, a puppy, first time chickens all within 2 months that I think the goats will have to wait till next year!

I think the goats might be waiting here, too. BF just suggested we keep them in our driveway, at least their shed.

I admit, I'm slightly, a bit, of an uppity girl and to me goats just don't belong in the driveway (my sincere apologies to everyone who has goats in their driveway - it's just not my thing). He also suggests they can go where we currently have 4 cords of wood stacked. Now, it's my turn to mow the lawn tomorrow, a task I truly abhor (hot, sweaty and being chased by bugs wanting to bite me is not my idea of a good time; oh and every time you mow it's a good chance to get poison ivy). But I would rather mow the lawn wearing an eskimo suit packed full of activated Hot Hands (R) than move 4 cords of wood in July.

No matter how cute the goaty face is.

So, I am getting all ready for tomorrow's Windham swap and I have couple of questions. First- anyone going tomorrow have an extra cage or 2? I have a coupple of pairs I would like to house together for folks to see, but all I have to bring everyone in is one big cage. Also, any tips on sexing Breda Fowl?? I have a couple I want to bring IF I can figure out the sex of them...but having no combs to give it away is throwing me off big time...

Sorry. I have only one wire crate that I am bringing for my birds. I have a smaller one but it is only suitable for one bird and needs a good cleaning. Other than that I have a few plastic dog kennels. Great for transport but not so much for viewing. I was thinking about bringing the brooder, actually a playpen, but I don't have a secure cover for it.

And having just wrestled with the EZ-Up I can honestly say there is nothing Easy about it when one person is trying to set it up. It can be done but I may have to arrive at 8 just to get it set up.

. Although now that I know how to do it I may have better luck tomorrow.
