Maine

ok guys, I need your help with something. our local poultry club is having their annual christmas auction on Sunday Nov 18th (you are welcome to attend- it is at the evening star grange hall in washington maine- auction starts at about 1:00 we usually have a short meeting first then the auction)

I am wanting to make something for the auction but I need suggestions. I can do anything in stained glass but I only have 2 weeks to do plus have time to post it up and have offer it to sealed bidders that can't attend but want to bid on it.
I'm sure you all saw the stained glass tray I made for the art show of the fox. I can do a sun catcher, ornament, pendant, or a box with glass tiles. what I need is ideas of what would appeal to the general population that would bring in higher bids. (these people can be pretty tight with money but this is one of our big fund raisers.)
I am also going to offer it to sealed bidders on both the central maine bird fanciers facebook page and here on byc. I will pay for shipping to anyone out of state and Im sure arrangements can be made to get it to the winner via club members around the state (if not, I'll cover that shipping).
that said, it should be able to fit in a flat rate mailing box.
ideas please.

here is a bit more info on the auction. we normally have many nice items. last yr there were several nice pairs of show birds offered, new in the package items, home cooked items (fudge, cakes, candies) frozen pork sausage, maple syrup. these are all by donation from the club members and offered to the general public and members to bid on. if you have something you would like to donate, you can contact me or just bring it to the auction.

A fifty chicken limit! It's been so hard to add to my current flock. I have 2 Buckeye boys and 13 ladies. Then I have 2 OEG bantam boys, 2 OEG hens and very tiny green egg laying black hen. So that's 20 and I'd like to add some dark egg layers and green/blue egg layers. I lost many of my first birds to a fox 4 years ago and miss the various colors I had running about my yard and their eggs.

Hrmmm.... I think what I really need to do is learn some carpentry skills so I can make a few smaller chicken pens. That way I can keep another breed of chicken. I love my Buckeyes and might be getting an incubator so I hatch some of my own. I'm really worried I might lose one or even both of my Buckeye boys so feel pressed to hatch more stock. Maybe what I should really do is find some roosters from a different breeder? Chicken genetics are foreign to me so maybe it isn't a bad thing or maybe it's terrible. Is bio diversity important?

Between the ducks and chickens I have around 18. I feel like an underachiever.

then you shouldn't be counting them. I only count the ones in the big bird coop- 13, because I have to have a certain number for winter to keep it warm enough. the silkie coop- no way am I going to even try to count those. all I care to know is that I have certain colors and a lot of pens.
(and I just added 2 more pens- thanks to the ducks taking my one big pen)

unfortunately silkies (and their counter parts- showgirls) don't typically roost.I believe it's because they don't see well with the head puff. here are a few suggestions to try. trim her around the eyes, mine didn't like to go outside until I did that, now they go right out until the fluff grows back. and/or build her a ladder to get to the perch. if she can see better, she might follow the girls into the coop but the jump to the perch might be too high for her to make it.

Yeah, I'll have to put in a silkie roost for her. She has a tough time getting into the coop. My boy showgirl roosts like a champ, highest roost, too. But his head puff is not puffy. The boy silkie I got from your egg had the same roosting difficulty, but he had a nice round puff.

The epitome of adorable:

Trying to get into the coop, she's a smart little one, using a stump for ups:

You can fix that feeling quite quickly. Need some eggs to hatch?

Not to be pushy, but I usually do the New Years Hatch, and my birds go outside around the middle of February (by 6 weeks old), without a heat lamp, just in a coop... and I've never lost a one.

Besides, more birds to snuggle with on the roost = winter birdie happiness... right?

. But I will hold out and wait for a February hatch at the earliest. If I do decide to hatch. That way they can go out in April. Just need the right breed to come along.
