Maine

They always seem to go where they are not supposed to go!! I have issues lately when I pull into my driveway...they won't get out of the way! I honk, and they still barely move. They also chase me when I go to get into the truck....

DH killed our lame hen yesterday. We had her in the house for 10 days, without seeing improvement in her ability to walk. I feel badly because she was so alert and had a great appetite, but there was no way to put her back in with the flock if she couldn't walk. I will miss her, but not the constant clean up of smelly, soiled newspaper and spilled water. Life goes on.
All the shopping stories have me anxious about having to go out and pick up some things today. It seems like black Friday is being pushed up to Wednesday now. I am thrilled, though, to have this day off.

Wanted to add: I lost TWO of my Orloffs today-- or discovered two. One had been eaten! My son ran out to close everyone in the cottage as I had done the barn. His video game was still waiting inside soooo he made a speedy close up job and left one out. The real kicker is that these were both very nice Orloffs, as in one of my two breeds I am focusing on. Sucky day for me.

So sorry for both of your losses.

When I went out to feed the troops this morning at 530 I had a chicken waiting for me by the front steps. Nothing like seeing something moving out of the corner of your eye when you don't expect it that early in the morning. :gig

She followed me over to the pen and I put her in with the others. Funny thing is I don't know if she is one of mine or a refugee from somewhere else. She is black with some tan feathers here and there. I think she is one of mine but I have several birds that color. I checked the pen and there were no obvious spots where she could have escaped from. No feathers on the ground. No holes in the fence panels. No holes in the ground around the pen.

as long as your chickens think she belongs, it's all good, right??

so i was making some healthy chips tonight, beet and sweet potato. first batch finished, had to run off to dog class, asked "someone" to finish up the baking. well I came home to the 2nd batch burnt and unedible. no more beets or sweet potatos so i guess i can't bring those to dinner tomorrow (which means the kids will be eating crap chips that the inlaws always buy (but of course they say they don't eat them, they're for the kids- then buy something healthy please!!)

SO many people have this problem! No matter what they eat today, you have set an excellent example with your healthy eating and weight loss, and I'm sure that message is sinking in with the kids (even if it isn't apparent yet).

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

I have not, but if i can find a recipe,i might just try to make some.
the day of over eating, spending the day with those we try to avoid all year and extreme patience has arrived to be followed by more days of " i want this" and disappointment. can you tell I just love holidays and family get togethers.

Have you tried Kale chips, Yummy!

People disparage holidays more and more and I have a hard time not doing it BUT this is what I came to realize for myself:
holidays are like marriages now; there is a fairytale version and then there is the real thing which is work but still good if you work on it. Neither one is sparkly and perfect all the time so I don't jump to divorce for either.
Setting time aside to be with those you care about is wonderful and being with those you don't want to be with is not. I am not obligated to be with anyone any day I don't want to (other than emergencies.) I don't feel guilty anymore and don't go out anymore and no one is trying to guilt me anymore either. I spend my time with those I love and who I hope love me. Its still not sparkly but at least its worth it. I did buy some glitter spray this year though. :)
I teach my kids not to over eat.
I teach my kids to make good choices in food (they even read labels before asking me if something new can come home)
I tell my kids if you are unhappy because you can't have something you want you shouldn't want it.
If you really want something you have to be willing to put in some of the money or work to get it. I will help you but.... This goes for foods at holiday time too.
I lead by example as often as I can. My two eldest spent the first half of today baking and cleaning with me. We are celebrating Saturday because we have a family built out of two divorced parents with children. So it is 'just a day' but what we make of it is what makes up the days in our lives and we are supposed to only have one life so... I try to make what I can of it. I fall short, I get tired and cranky and burn things and don't get everyone what they want but I make a lot of things and spend a lot of time and thought on it and usually (usually!) the things I make have a value that grows while the things that were wanted as a fad lose their value.
Just my penny purse spilling out here. I hope you all don't mind much.I'm grateful that the government sets a few days a year aside as 'family days' for the convenience of planning. It would be so nice if they valued families a little more often and in other ways as well.
