Major Mortality rate what could be wrong with my flock? HELP PLEASE

The lady from the USDA came out this morning and was here for over an hour. She swabed the throat and vent of 10 of the younger birds (between 3-4mths) as well as 5 of the adult chickens and 5 of the ducks. She said we didn't need to swab the guineas because none had died. We also killed three of the young ones (very sick ones) and she took there bodies and heads with her. She said she will be taking them to ames tomorrow. She was a wonderful lady, very nice and very helpful, she didn't make us feel like it was our fault or that we had done something wrong. She said we were not to sell or move any birds from our property until we get the results. Which we hadn't planned to do anyway. The results will probably come some time next week. They will only test for AI and END and she asked them to test for... I can't remember the name of it something larengytus (sp?) because that is what Dr. Trample thought it was. Dr. Trample is the guy I talked to first that asked me to cut them open myself, he told me he thought it was Fowl pox at that time. Anyway if it is AI or END We will have to destroy everything we have including the peacock! Poor Pan

makes me want to cry. Otherwise she said if it is somehting else the chickens could still be carriers but we wouldn't have to destroy them. I think if it is something that they can carry and give to something else I may destroy the chickens, but hopefully it is not something that the ducks, guineas, and Peter pan has and then they can stay and I will just wait till next spring to get any more chickens. I think from now on I am going with ordering hatching eggs from here and not buying anymore adult birds or even chicks.
I gave her this site and told her that most of the information I had given her was on here on this thread. I do not know if she will check it out or not but hopefully she does. Maybe she can even give us some more advice through here. She really was a great lady and despite the circumstances was almost fun as we swabbed the chickens and ducks.
Well just wanted to update everyone. Will let you know more as I know more.
Thanks again
Melissa

Great news. I hope it is none of the bad diseases they are testing for BUT, I hope they can tell you what to do(treat) the others. This is such a long time coming - they should have done this from the start instead of making you suffer so long. But I guess the more desperate they let you get, the more you will be grateful for anything they do. I am so glad for you, you can bet all the bycers will be HERE for you, if you should need to start over next year. I hope this is a major turning point in your life and all your personal concerns will be lessened.

Ah, Melissa....

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this, but I'm glad you are finally getting help and that the lady was nice to deal with. I'm sure just the "not knowing" is awful in and of itself. At least when you know what it is, you know what you are up against and what you can do. I truly hope it is something easily curable and you won't have to destroy more birds.

Oh geez, I am so sorry you are going through this. I hope you get some answer soons. Thank you for sharing your story, it really drives home the need to be very careful when it comes to biosecurity.

So sorry to hear of everything that you've been going through, both with the animals and with everything else.

I'm so glad that someone is finally doing something about it though! It is ridiculous everything that you have had to go through to try and get the proper people to get out there and help. I had a chicken that was coughing and sneezing. I was concerned so I called the local extension office and the woman literally laughed at me. I was so angry. The guy I talked to was no help and was supposed to call me back but never did. I was very fortunate in that my chicken was fine. She must have breathed in something that irritated her throat.

I hope that they are able to give you answers. I would still worry about the water though. Having well water, you could be in the same vein as your friend. Do you know how deep your well is and how deep hers is? I would still rather have well water than city water. Yuck!

Good luck and God Bless. We will be praying for you.
And congrats on the new job!
