I have an egg eater in my midst. Luckily it does not happen really often but was needing to get some golf balls or fake eggs. Then I got to thnking, I have lots of smallish river rock about he size of eggs. Couln't I paint a few egg shaped ones with non toxic paint and use those? Would they hurt the chickens in any way? I don't want to pay for fake eggs if I don't have to.

That sounds like a great idea. I don't see why not, as long as you use a non-toxic paint. May not even need to paint it if its brown-ish and you have brown egg layers. If a golf ball can fake 'em out, why not a rock? LOL!

Some/most people imitate eggs with golf balls. The toxic paint may not be to good unless it has a repelling odor because, there is the possibility of consumption

I have had good success using a roughly egg-sized/shaped grey rock as a nest egg to 'train' new layers, so I would think they'd accept it well enough to try to peck it if they were so inclined.

Like you say, you'd use nontoxic paint, so, no problem there

Good luck,
