Make your own - No waste - 5 gallon (25# feed) bucket feeder for about $3

Pics
I went to the hardware store today and looked at the elbows. The chickens really stick their heads in the hole to get the feed? I think i need to see a picture to believe it....
Click on the "view all" in the upper right, above the photos, several photos of birds using these.

I don't have a shot of the rooster using it at this moment. I will get one eventually.

Thabk you for the pictures. I believe it... By seeing the 3" elbow in the hardware store it just seemed like a chicken wouldn't stick their head in the opening. Being a contractor and having all kinds of stuff laying around will make it easy and cheap to make this feeder... I bet i could make a smaller version for my brooder. Definitely worth a try. I have messy chickens and they don't clean up after themselves. Thanks BYC folks!!!

I made one of these for my birds, they wont use it?,i think they would starve to death if i didnt put the old feeder back in there.I have one of the round ones from the tractor supply store,i have it hanging about 10 inches high,it helps to put a wooden tray under it to catch the droppings. Harvey

I have found an issue with the square feeder, I'm hoping someone has a fix for it. We have a Rubbermaid tote, with two pipes in front and one on each side. The chickens eat from it just fine, and I know this because everyday I open the top and there's no food above the pipes. They're eating, and the food doesn't keep falling into the middle, so I have to move it around and get it over the pipes. I'm wonder if this is a specific issue with the shape of the box? Maybe I should just make the 5 gallon bucket?

Remove your other feeder, they're just using what they know. But, if you put a little food on the lip of the pipes, so they can see it, they will start using the new feeder.

You are welcome, I had the same conversation with BF when we were in Home Depot buying the elbows. We have a Buff Orph roo and he has no issues using these feeders.

I agree with what Ash said, I grabbed a hand full of feed and put them in the lip of the elbow when I first showed the gang. Only took that and calling them over to the feeder and showing them the grains, they took right to it and we had been using the same types of dish for feed before switching.

Cluckies....I can't follow the instructions you gave to see the photos. I'm sorry.
Hmmm, your computer must be laid out differently. With mine in the upper right hand corner it says "Recent Images In This Thread" then you can click on "View All" and see all the images on this thread. If you are on a phone, maybe it it not there?

Nope...I don't see that anywhere. I always use my laptop when I'm on the internet. There is only an occasional excursion onto the internet when I'm on my phone. I wonder why you have that option and I don't. That would be really cool to be able to do that instead of scanning each page hoping to find the picture you're looking for.
