Make your own - No waste - 5 gallon (25# feed) bucket feeder for about $3

I think (hope!) I have killed the two big rats living in the area, but will leave the bait under the chook house in case there are more. It is just the wild birds to keep out of the food now. Thanks for your advise!

@tntchix

-sigh- I really need another one or two.... I wish I could just grab one of yours.

Finally, the new tote feeder is done and I got a new heat gun out of the deal. Sweet! The hole saw was 1/4" smaller than the street elbow so the idea of a heat gun is great because it seals as it cools. Now, as soon as this blizzard lets up, it goes out to the coop.
Nice job, will be curious to see how you like the square option, ours seem to be doing well with the five gallon and 15 gallon feeder. I hang the 5 gallon up at night so the mice can't get to it,now gotta figure out caps for the 15 gallon to keep mice out.

I will be a first-time chicken raiser in a couple of weeks, so I'm reading all I can. I have read this thread once already but that was several weeks ago and I can't remember if this question was addressed. I assume when chickens eat their grain, there is some chaff that comes off when the chickens crack the seed. Or when the feed is made, is all the chaff taken off? So when using a feeder like these shown, does that chaff, if there is any, build up in the bottom of the feeder and do the chickens have to hunt through the chaff to get to the grain?

Chickens eat crumble or pelleted food. So they won't be picking through seeds like a house bird would. The food that is seeds, is called scratch,you throw that on the ground and they eat the whole thing.

usually chickens are fed pellets or crumbles, where all of the feed has been processed and has no chaff or hulls to worry about....

often people feed cracked corn to chickens as a treat.... but that has no hulls

when people feed sunflower seeds with the shells to chickens... they eat the entire seed, shell and all.

Thank you for your information. This is something I haven't talked to my daughter about, yet...(she my chicken expert) I see bird seed in the store and the scratch that we've thrown out to her chickens but I really haven't seen what she's fed them, so I really had no idea what chicken feed looked like. Thanks, again.

I know that I need to feed chick (baby) starter until they're feathered out...and possibly longer. Just a couple of more weeks and I should have my first fuzzies, so I'm looking at assembling my feeder and waterer made. It's going to be an interesting time.
