For the first week or two, I used a regular tray feeder. The kind that has the flip cover, with holes in it. They did waste feed, but not as bad as a cylinder feeder. That thing just pours out feed.

Would the second one you made have also worked for the two week old chicks or was it necessary to have both sizes of feeder?

I actually made the 2" elbow feeder first. They were able to get their shoulders up in the feeder, and actually pull out feed to waste. I was also afraid one of them might get up in it and get stuck, so I made the smaller 1 1/2" elbow feeder and it worked much better for them at that age.

I didn't worry about having two feeder sizes, since I plan on having more babies in the future. You can always make the smaller one, and then when they move up in size, take out the small elbow, enlarge the hole and put in the larger elbow.

Wondering if you set it on a cinder block or bricks, could you use U joints? Or would gravity cause it to overflow? The U joints would prevent spillage?

I have been avidly reading this thread and thought I had come up with the solution for feeding my eight pullets. Then I saw the mention of rats discovering the feeder a few pages back. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii and we have thousands, I kid you not, thousands, of mice where we live. We are building our coop now and are attempting to make it as mouse proof as possible, but it's an uphill battle. The run and windows will be 1/4 inch hardware cloth which should be too small for most of the rodents...we hope!

Questions:

Is this the wrong feeder for us? If not, how can we keep the mice out of the feeder?

Will my chickens kill and eat the field mice?
