Making a Mash

Our hens eat crumbles out of a feeder and various food scraps, but I would like to know how to make a mash for them as a treat. How do you make them? Is this healthier then just crumbles?
 
Search the fermented feed thread I am currently making a mash so I can add free grain dust.
