I saw a picture somewhere of a silkie breeder with homemade booties on her birds to protect their leg/foot feathers. I just got a pair of black Cochin bantams (

) that are pretty good quality and their leg feathers are very nice. I keep my chickens in a large run and their feathers are going to be worn to stubs in no time.
I was thinking, as a pattern, a circle for the sole (extra-thick), with a tube stitched to it , with drawstrings at the top.
But I'm afraid that they won't be able to grip their perch at night.
Has anyone else ever "booted' their bird?

Why not just keep them on wire and/or shavings if you are worried about keeping their feet feathers in condition?

Boots would break the feather shafts, and they'll be just as bad as dirty feathers.....
