Making hard candy

mmmm, now try them on Vinegar candy , g/ma used to make this , she dusted her pieces with confectioner Sugar when the pieces were done

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup vinegar
2 tablespoons butter

Put butter into kettle; when melted, add sugar and vinegar. Stir until sugar is dissolved, afterwards occasionally. Boil until, when tried in cold water, mixture will become brittle. Turn on a buttered platter to cool. Pull, and cut

I'm sorry I didn't see your response. No it does not have a vinegary taste, it has a twang that leaves you wanting more. My mouth waters when I think of it. I usually make a batch around the holidays.....mmmmmmm

I've never made hard candy but it sounds interesting. How hard is it to make without a thermometer? What happens if you overcook or undercook?

I'm not sure Jojo, but candy thermometers are at every walmart or dollar store, grab one next time you go by.

I do remember my G/ma cooking her candies by stages, not with thermo's, so I guess it's possible.

If you don't have a thermo. there is a way to check to see if it is ready. Put some on a spoon, and drop in some water, if it forms into a ball the it is ready. All I did was searched hard candy, and found the recipe on there. It is really easy.

What temp if using a candy therm. for my hard candy I let it get to 300 degrees, would it be the same with this recipe?
