Making Lemonade [Selective Culling Project - very long term]

Strength and luck. Yup. Substitute hard work for strength, that's how most people get anywhere meaningful on the road of life.

I can't deny we've had some good luck along the way, but hubby and I sure worked hard to get where we are.

To be clear, I was quoting the survival chicken idea that only the strong survive in terms of natural selection. Wily, fast, flighty, hardy chickens are more likely to make it in the wild. That’s all I was taking about. As for luck vs. hard work in humans: yes, hard work matters. I’ve worked hard to get where I am. But luck plays an enormous role - it was luck that kept me from having any serious genetic defects that would have hampered me, luck that landed me in a relatively peaceful environment to live in, luck that had me born into a family that valued education, and on and on. Anyone on this site is benefitting from the luck of having access to internet, which is not universally the case. In my work I’ve seen too many people who didn’t have some of those factors and it is clear that privilege plays a big part and it is decidedly NOT a level playing field.
