I currently have 4 chickens and 2 guinea fowl. Local hatcheries have been bringing in chicks and I wanted to buy some more to make my flock bigger. I can't decide on three white chickens. Delaware, Leghorn, or White rock? 2 Yellow breeds, Orpington or Golden sex link? Or mixed golden, Welsummer, Buff brahma bantam, Cream Legbars, or Ameraucana? I cant decide, they're all beautiful

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Of the white chickens, the Leghorns will probably lay the most eggs, but Delawares are really nice friendly duel purpose birds and also good layers of jumbo eggs. The gold sex links will lay the most eggs again, but they also can be a little bossy with other birds, Orpingtons are popular as pets and do go broody. Welsummers are fun because of the dark eggs, and Cream Legbars because of the blue, the hatchery probably have Easter Eggers (not Ameraucana) a lot of times those lay greenish eggs...So if you are looking mostly for egg layers the White Leghorn and Sex Links and Easter Eggers... if duel purpose or more pets the Delaware and the Orpington (especially if you plan on having a broody to hatch eggs)...add the Welsummer and Legbar if you want a really colorful egg basket,

Thank you, It's a good idea to get all but I don't want too many especially if they're going to have chicks. Mostly I'm going to have them for pets and colorful eggs.

Welcome to BYC. The only way you are going to have chicks is if you have a rooster to fertilize the eggs. You don't need a rooster for your hens to lay eggs. If you want colored eggs, then you are going to want easter eggers. I have issa browns and barred rock hens. They are very friendly and lay lots of great eggs. Be sure you have room for them. 4sq. ft. per hen in the coop and 10 sq. ft. per hen in the run. Good luck on what ever you decide.
