How old is your chicken (you did not say it was a chick per se) ?
Put electrolytes in the water for the panting... (you will find this at your feed store)
If your bird has no congestion or other respiritory signs (or do they?) and since you mentioned your had other birds die of it , I too am thinking perhaps gapeworm.

she is about 1 year old i think i got her july 4th 2007 i think...
or 2008 i dont really remember.
but everything oddly cleared up...
idk what this is all about she has them and then she doesnt..
maybe she is lucky but now she has really soft poooo.

We had a hen that was throwing her head around and we figured it was because she was trying to get something down her throat. Turned out she had an impacted crop. Maybe you should pick your hen up and feel if her breast area is hard and enlarged compared to your other chickens. If it is impacted, there are things you can do. I took ours to the vet who works on birds but he wouldn't do the surgery because I guess the cost was going to be very high. We did save Celeste however.
