I know this was posted several pages back, but I'd been thinking about it ever since. I didn't know that! I thought Jerry S made up the name Cocapop, and I wasn't clear on what it really meant. Someone said that it was chocolate with a pattern. Either way, dun (I^d) and chocolate dilute black, so any red would be unaffected, right? That bird looks like my Midas, which I've been calling pumpkin. I know it's a hobby name, but it has me wondering, how similar is Cocapop and Pumpkin, genetically? Midas has two daughters that are growing up to be a dirty grey, or dun, and I didn't know how they got that way, but the dun gene makes sense! The mother is a hen that I don't like, confirmation-wise, but she keeps throwing such interesting chicks!

I ordered 30 serama eggs last month and got 36. On my first candle at day 6 I had 31 developing.... on day10 I had 28 developing. The hatch ended yesterday and I have 14 adorable hatched babies. We noticed yesterday that at 1 day old one of the babies started acting strangely. They all hatched alone and are quite vigorous but this one seems to have a normal body and legs but spends most of the time lying on one side or the other. It can right itself up and walk for a few wobbley steps but then goes back to it's side and sleeps. Any thought? I can post a vid on youtube if that would help. I thought it would die yesterday and it's still in it's confinement lying down.

Also when can I tell gender of these babies and how far along do they have to be before I can get an idea of what their final size will be?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Jane! You should be able to tell the relative size of your babies pretty soon, which will be smaller than the others. Gender in about a month. My guess is that the one lying around will not make it without help.. Could be that there is something wrong with it's legs, and it won't be able to get around to eat and drink. Check out the legs to see if there is anything different about them. Different length, shape, red or swollen joints, etc. will impede it's movement. You will have to decide whether or not you will be able to fix it, and you will need to monitor the chick closely. If there are not any other internal anomolies, just the leg issues, the chick will likely die of starvation unless you help. I've put down several chicks this year with "wonky leg syndrome", but I've had one (bantam Cochin)survive and do very well. Good luck!

We plan to keep 2 as inside pets who has been struggling since raccoons killed and ate our 3 backyard chickens at the end of May but they are all so cute, everybody has a favorite

I have babies hatching under two broodies right now!!

Can't wait to see what all I get, one so far and it is solid cream colored and tiny.

so far! Moved one of the hens and the two to a hutch by themselves, just afraid that two mamma's on one nest could be dangerous to the chicks. Other hen is setting on the remaining 10 eggs still waiting to hatch, come one babies!!

Will get pictures of chicks just as soon as they get a bit more active, one is a solid cream and the other an unusual color hard to even try and describe?? I just love my

.

I use to have a lot of them, but now not so many. I moved and had to sell off most of my birds. But I kept some!!
Here are some I have now. Goldie and Baby Sarge hached their first clutch ever this year. They are 7 years old, so it was amazing that Goldie finally decided to sit. They have 7 babies. All the eggs she had hatched.
