i have found that rabbit feeders with a piece of plastic (cut like the little chick feeders with the holes) over the opening works really well and keeps waste down

Mandy, do you have a picture of that? How do you keep the plastic in place? Thanks, Ruth

I use one like that in one of my pens but they don't really make a mess so I hadn't thought about a cover like that with holes, excellent idea. What is in the bottom to keep the crumples from sifting out?

Thank you. I like to watch him strut his stuff.
Notice how small he is in comparison to the maple bonsai.

Hello! How is everyone doing? I haven't been around much lately because I had a loooong hatch over three days. It was so stressful! On my birthday I honestly thought that the last chick would die in the shell but he was worth waiting for. He turned out to be a really neat silver color.
Four blacks, one freak of nature white with a silver back and dark legs from my black smooth hen, four chipmunks, two yellows with dark wings, one yellow with grey wings, and the silver baby.
As for my bigger chicks they are all doing great - two are super small and four of them look like great prospects for my whites that I'm trying to get started. I swear, finding a white hen with yellow legs is like trying to find a needle in a haystack!
I hope everyone is having luck. Right now I have eight hatching eggs from my black/silkied pair on hold but I don't think I'll be pulling out the incubator until my tiny two week old baby no longer demands 50% of my time. It's the same size as my newly hatched babies - it's healthy but will not grow. In other words I saved hatching eggs for nothing. I expected that very few of my eggs would hatch and I was wrong. Out of all of the eggs I stuck in the incubator only two didn't develop, so it was a great hatch.
I'm sending my good luck out to everyone else - happy hatching!

I have the plastic gravity feeders from TSC and use the little layena pellets, they throw those things all over their pens!

They already have solid bottoms so gonna make some lids and see if it helps cut down on waste.
