now i know how i am going to die...

but, um, i do blame a stye and a severe eye infection on the chicks that i got last month... my brooder is up high... so when i feed the chick, they see my head and face only... LOL... but you know, their dust and stuff does go flying all over the place when i feed them and give them water... so i blame them for the infection i just got over it...

Wow, I thought only pigs made styes.. not little chicks.

No seriously, its a good reminder. I took a food safety course years ago, and its stayed with me, and grossed me out ever since. Having been violently ill from food poisoning (chicken-borne illness, not salmonella, but something else...) LONG before I ever even owned chickens, its not stuff to joke about.

On the other hand..... I took my Serama chicken into the local pet store today for some shopping. I was the only one with a chicken! Everyone else had boring dogs

And ZooMummzy- I am terribly sorry to hear about your hen. Did you have any clues that she was stressing other than the obvious cross country trip? I've been tempted many times to order from our wonderful East Coast breeders, but I worry so much about the transport. It sounds like most make the trip well, but my gosh, to make that commitment to keep them, and have it die a week later is heartbreaking! And its not just about the $$, you get attached to these little birdies the minute you decide to buy them!

hi,
i appreciate the reminder Jerry.I always wash good after coming from the barn, but have been complacent about after playing with the chicks
in the house. My immune system is a little goofy so try to be careful.
Well, one of the pearlysue chicks has hatched..........and is very tiny and weak.
Just hope for the best at this point I guess..

Don't want to open the bater .have 8 more eggs in there.
Going to be a long night..............

I will agree it is good advice, but some I just don't follow

Probably should but I never will so I'm not even going to try....

And thank you. No, not really. When I picked her up in Canby from cloverleaf, she seemed just freaked out over the whole thing. By the time I got her home, she was huddled in the box and still freaked out. She immediately started hiding under the larger pullets and never really wanted to interact at all. She was eating and drinking and doing all the normal chicken stuff but I think she just never got over the stress of the trip. Juliette did tell me she was at the bottom of the pecking order so maybe that was part of it. I just don't know. I knew the risk was there when I bid and honestly, I'd do it all over again because she has amazing birds. They are even better in real life than in her photos if you can believe that! I would say order with confidence and just know that you do take that risk.

Sorry, I kiss, nuzzle, hug and get my chickens as close to my face as possible and all of my Seramas live inside. I haven't died in 4 years or gotten sick so I figure I'm good

I'm with ZooMummzy, my chickens get kisses, give me kisses, and I am still here......I do try to keep their lving quarters a clean as possible- they get cleaned 365 days a year.

I also have owned a horse for 30+ years and still have not gotten sick from having contaminated hands--- so maybe I am immune to everything......also I do not like salmon so that really must be the reason......

Do you have a hatch date? I'm looking at the end of next week...

I saw a number of wigglies in there when I candled!

Man Sunny, I THINK today was day 7-8. Beeps seriously started this "sitting on the egg" stuff on the 21st so I am guessing this is day 7-8...and hatching is 21 days, which would make it July 11????
Now I really understand what you went thru with your first hatch----YIKES I am a GAMMA to be!!!

I have a half dozen or so due to hatch Friday-Sunday, some were set different days. Then, after that, I'll have several a week from staggered hatches. Friday, I'm going to June's to visit and see all her little secrets

and I'm so looking forward to it.

As far as hygiene, I have a pretty tough immune system. I've worked in health care since 1978 so I've been "exposed" enough I am manufacturing my own antibodies to most everything and I've sedated patients for colonoscopy's for the past 13 years and there's not a moment that I am not making sure I use the best hygiene possible!

It's really cute to share food and snuggles with your pets until you catch something or worse, transmit it to another beloved pet. I know you all are a funny bunch, and I get a kick out of your silliness but please take it seriously. As a nurse, I have also been a caregiver to an amazingly large number of patients who never thought they would "catch" anything from poor hygiene. Jerry is doing you all a great service by reminding you all that when you receive your new birds and even hatching eggs, please use good hygiene and proper care to ensure everyone stays well. Stress is a major contributor as well and another thing that came to mind about Tammy having a sour crop, use a bit of apple cider vinegar, not the kind at the store but the real stuff with the "mother" in it, put a tsp or so per gallon of water, especially in hot, damp weather to keep them healthy.
