That's Peanut!?!?! Wow, he sure grew up! Very pretty! I'm on the fence about getting silkieds. At one show, a silkied Serama was named RB. At another, under the same judge, silkieds were declared ineligable for top awards. I think I'll decide after they make up their minds.......

Oh, and I can't say that I'm glad to be back. Paris was amazing, and I didn't see everything yet! I changed a hundred dollars into euros, and then didn't spend a penny. Everyone/thing was beautiful; I was the fattest woman in France!

Regarding the showing of silkieds, or any serama, none will be eligible for anything higher than a BB until they are accepted into ABA. Even then, with white being the first accepted color (as is currently planned), if it happens, none of the other varieties will be eligible, only the accepted variety or varieties should more be added at a later date. In all reality, expecting a serama to win anything other than a BB or perhaps a class win (assuming they are going to be placed in the SCCL class) would be highly unrealistic. The class competition would have to be horrible IMHO. I believe it will be many, many, and then many more years before you'd ever see a serama win a large ABA show. I don't think it will happen in my lifetime nor my daughters. Getting accepted is one thing. Taking the top award away from a long established breed such as OEGB for example is going to be nearly impossible. Seramas aren't "there" yet, and they won't be "there" for many years to come. Then once they've been set in breed type & color, then they have to pay their dues so to speak to the ABA show world. A lot of serious show people, while they may be intrigued by the breed, are still very hesitant to accept them as equals in the poultry world.

So Liz, that judge is correct, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying them if you choose to do so. I think going for acceptance is a good thing, but I think too many people are hanging their stars on that aspect. And if you're going to wait for acceptance, you'll never own a silkied serama if that's your stipulation.

I like mine. I rarely show them (haven't shown any for almost 2 yrs now I believe) but I enjoy them at home.

What I meant by BB and RB is the champ/res. champ of the SCNA shows. The same bird that was named res. champ of the SCNA show at Green River was declared ineligable for the same award at the Kentuckiana show, based on his silkiedness.

You should have put your foot down because a breeder of SCNA shouldn't have any say in what should or shouldn't be allowed based on their personal preference. It isn't their call. Standards were written to be used, not ignored at someone's insistence just because they didn't want their bird beat by a silkied. Don't tolerate that stuff. If there's a standard, make them stand by it. If you don't, you'll get railroaded more than just once.

I was at a show last month where they kindly gave Seramas a breed trophy of their own. They also said they'd allow them to compete for Show Champion, and I asked them not to do that because they weren't yet a recognized breed and they wanted to follow ABA rules. I was just happy to show them to anyone who wanted to see and hold them.

When you show your seramas, if there is a standard in place by SCNA, take a copy of it with you so you always have it on hand. IF you want your birds judged per SCNA standard. And you'll have that ammunition should you run into this scenario again. Edgar knows better. That's too bad that happened. Unless of course they threw the silkied standard out and no longer have one and are not officially allowing the silkieds to compete equally with the smooth feathered birds, then what I've said doesn't apply.

I don't know. I'm no longer with SCNA so I can't comment beyond what I knew when I left the club.
