~MALAYSIAN SERAMA THREAD~ (PICS!!!)

Just wanted to add my thoughts on the issue. I also thought the post was rude. I have 2 serama, 1 happens to be more PQ, the other is more BQ. I love them both no matter what. I am a byc member because i love all chickens no matter what they look like.
I do however want to buy(when i get enough money) some serama that are close to SQ because they are so nice looking.

Now onto my question:

What is the best incubator everyone here would recommend for serama? I have a LG still air with a turner i just need to get a new bottom for it. Is there a better one out there that is cheap or should i stick with the LG? I only wanna hatch everyone once in a while, id prefer to use broodies but i dont have an empty cage for her to come in the house right now so the bator will be used in cooler weather so i dont have to bring mamma in.
Thanks

My best answer is a broody

Sorry, lol. I have an LG - horrible hatches. I have a Brinsea Advance - horrible hatches. Maybe someone else will have a better answer but my broody hens are still the best incubators around.

It's been a few days, lol so I thought I'd share a photo of Zephyr. He's almost 10 weeks old now and starting to practice his crow. It's the funniest thing I've ever heard. Thankfully he is a very good boy and waits till he hears me get up to start in. Let's hope he continues this good behavior

Sadly, Aggie, his look alike and cage mate, is going to be euthanized on Monday

He was born with a slipped tendon and I couldn't fix it but he learned to get around quite well. Since I have other special need chickens I was not going to cull him for this. A few days ago I noticed he was having a really hard time walking and then couldn't get up at all. I have tried a few things but nothing is working and I just cannot let him go on like this. The hard part is he has a good spirit and still eats and drinks and is very interactive, he just can't walk. It is very heartbreaking

Dina and Zephyr have been very good to him, making sure they don't step on him, sleeping with him at night and not pushing him away when he eats. I think they will miss him too.

BB the broody has hatched 6 out of 7 serama eggs today. Last one died in it's shell sadly...Another one hatched with a deformed eye but is getting around great under momma..

Pepper had 0 hatched the last time I looked, will be looking again in the morning.

I know it must be hard to put down animals...but if they have problems that can't be fixed then I think it's for the best..don't blame yourself!

:)Great having another chicken friend and ur my First SERAMA FB friend. ZEPHYR is handsome & adorable. Sorry about Aggie, I deal w/ death a lot, as I have many farm animals,it is always painful but I just try to deal w/ it & count my blessings. I'm bottle feeding 2 kids now & hope they stay alive & healthy, life is fragile.

Well I am going to bed as they will need another bottle sooner than I will want to get up & give it to them !!! My best to you, Elizabeth

I don't want to start anything but basically are you saying if we (general Serama lovers) can't make or add to the perfection of the bird we shouldn't have Seramas at all or shouldn't sell them to others who do want them? If so, I think that's a bit uppity. Sorry to be blunt but that's the way I am. There are a lot of people who simply love the breed for what it is same as they love every other breed of chicken. They want a house pet, they want to have a little flock of Seramas, whatever. I agree people should not be selling pet quality birds as show quality - that is just false advertising, but I don't think everyone who has Seramas "needs" to be breeding for perfection or contributing to the perfection as you said. Now if this is not what you meant, then I am sorry and retract my blunt statement.

Im not saying that people should not have PQ serama and breed them, but like you said, do not sell them as SQ and make sure people know that they are not SQ. What I am saying is that people that want to breed serama for a purpose should breed toward the perfection of the breed.

Here is my question to you Silver Duckwing, can you please define "purpose" in your last sentence?? I LOVE the Serama breed, I love my two "babies" and they are with me solely for the joy they bring me. Are you saying I should not breed my "babies" just because they would not enhance the "perfection of the breed"?

You know, there are a lot of "serama snobs" out there, just as there are with other breeds. However, with seramas, it has always seemd to be just a little different. I mean, constructive criticism is one thing - but RUDENESS is entirely another. Its just plain offensive, IMO.

Several years ago, anyone that posted a pic of a lesser quality serama was almost ganged up on, with everyone pointing their fingers at the photo, shouting "MIXED BREED!!!" I'm glad to see that isn't happening much anymore - maybe some people realized that you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, I don't know.

But some of the comments I see being made about seramas nowadays by a handful of people STILL make me cringe. They make me not want to share my birds with anyone, pics or otherwise no matter WHAT quality they may or may not be. I never see these types of comments being made on the cochin thread or the silkie thread, for example - wonder why that is? Their comments are usually polite and helpful - and that's the way people LEARN. Not by being told basically "your birds are crap".

I never claim to have a SQ flock, nor a PQ flock - and I make no distinction between American or Malaysian - my birds are just nice little seramas, thats all. Granted, some are better quality than others, I have several "projects" going on, and I do try to improve them with each generation - but *I* love them ALL, and they please ME - and that's all that matters, IMO. Whether you show so-called "perfect" seramas (if there even IS such a thing), or if you have a handful of pets in the house or in the backyard, that's all that should matter to you, too. Regardless of what the snobs say about them.

Just my 2 cents...

Totally agree!!
