JUST RECEIVED WORD FROM DELMARVA
THE AMERICAN SERAMA IS NOW AN ACCEPTED BREED
THE WHITE IS THE FIRST RECOGNIZED VARIETY

Accepted by the American Poultry Association? That's quite fabulous!

As luck would have it, I only have wheatens and barred wheatens here.
I have the first chick of the season from this fellow:

Not to perpetuate argument. There is such a diverse group here, breeders, pet owners and everything in between. I think we can still all get along if we'll remember that we all have an opinion. Some will call people snobs or uppity if they're defending their breed and some will have the opinion that if you are breeding poor quality and selling them or calling them Serama that they are not responsible. It's all name calling and not necessary. I am on both sides sometimes. I Love them all. Sometimes the worst looking will get my heart but at the same time, if someone asks what I think of their bird, I'm not going to lie to them. Only your best friends will tell you that you have a booger on your nose

I never take that to imply that if you told me I had a booger on my nose that I would think you were making fun of me or thought there was something wrong with me, I just had a booger on my nose. In the same way, when someone is asking for opinions, I think it would be a bad thing to lie to them. How is anyone to learn if people, friends, are not honest? I would always like for a critique to be honest. None of them are perfect so even the best breeder Serama's are not prefect, however, it's a "breed" for a reason. There is a written standard to describe "perfection". If I had an opinion, and I do, people can raise anything they want. They can choose to breed away from the standard and still have beautiful birds but there is a point where they are not even close to the breed and it's not like a horse where if you have many generations of horses of a registered breed so regardless how close or how far from the breed standard a QH may be, it is still a QH. Not so in poultry. It amazes me sometimes how the poultry breeds ever got to where they are today, all of them. They are just a couple generations from not being what they started out as at any given time. There is a lot at stake to breeders who see these nice folks buying birds who are so far from the standard that they are not recognizable so an opinion from a dedicated breed enthusiast may sound critical and harsh but I don't think that is any less harsh than someone who calls someone uppity, rude, snobbish etc for standing up for their breed. Ethics in breeding is very important to me but I understand that anyone here should be able to do what they want with their own as well. It's sort of like rights and responsibilities to me. I have a right to do as I see fit but a responsibility to breed the best I know how, to learn every day and to have an outlet for those I breed that do not fit into a breeding program. I have given several away as pets but when I do, they are called mixed bantam breed because they are not intended to be part of someone elses breeding program, my choice. Everyone has to find their own way.

In the end, my own opinion is that BYC's is fun, crazy fun sometimes, informative, loads of gorgeous pictures but also a very diverse group of chicken lovers. None of us are perfect either and if I slip up and hurt someones feelings, I do not intend it and I try not to. If I want a real critique, I go to the SCNA now ( http://www.seramacouncilofnorthamerica.com/ ) where I can expect breeders with good knowledge of this breed to give me gut wrenching, truthful critique so I can see past my love for my little guys and do a better job for them. Maybe we should ask that there be no critique of the Serama's here and just refer them to the SCNA if they would like more information since this is a Serama thread. As far as critique for cuteness, I think we need to be gathering up a bunch of blue ribbons and try not to be so harsh with each other.

Well, me being nosey, I had to go and see what comment was rude... Saw Jerry's comment and I'm hoping that's not what started this. It honestly didn't seem so bad

I've been breeding for a few years in chickens, and breeding/training horses for even longer... You need to take what people say and use it to your advantage, no matter what. I've been given harsh criticism, and I've had people talk about me while I was right there, just as if I wasn't. Use it to become better at what you're doing. I usually steer clear of the "what are your opinions of my bird" posts cause most people really don't want the truth even when they ask for it. BYC is an excellent place to find breeders like Jerry, or enthusiasts. You will get a different response from a true breeder than you will from an enthusiast. The time and effort put into birds like his is unimaginable, and honestly I would welcome critiques from breeders like him any day of the week. Sorry if you don't like my 2 cents, just felt the need this time.

Ohhh I love that splash look or maybe its reverse mottled? Maybe she is a Paint Serama, like the Paint Silkies lol. Haven't seen one like that before! Laura is a pretty little girl

Thank you

Yep, she's a keeper, lol unfortunately I didn't.

Nah, Cloverleaf is going to give her a good home. Her son wants to show her and I think she will enjoy that a lot. I'm glad she's going to someone I know and I know takes great care of her birds, plus I see her twice a year at our swaps

Well, Jerry tells it like he sees it but he also promotes your dime your time. He simply has a passion for his breed and I understand he was banned from BYC's because of it. I'm considering opting out of BYC's if that is how they do business. Who ever cause him to be banned should be ashamed. How silly is it to ban someone who has so much to offer here? Major loss.

not directing this at you but I did not see where the thread is a thread that is for critiquing other folks birds I have read every page here and enjoy ALL the folks birds who have put pictures up I enjoy the breeders who are trying to sell birds and also the pet quality birds most folks have eyes and a brain they can look at their birds an the standard and see where theirs are . Daddy's older brother used to tell me the good Lord never made no ugly women He just made some prettier then other'ns this philosophy has served me well through my life

and with birds too

I like your idea - no critiquing - show/breeder type comments at least to prevent ruffling feathers in the future because I can pretty much guarantee that if comments keep being made - subtle or not so subtle - about the quality of people's birds here, more of what happened yesterday will happen, the thread will be closed and/or some really nice people will stop visiting this thread all together. All of those are really sad options.

If everyone goes back and reads the first post of this very long thread, it was started by someone sharing photos of their new babies. They did not ask if they were good quality Seramas, they didn't want to start a show thread (or so it would seem) or anything else. They simply wanted a place to show off their new little chickens. People joined in, shared their photos and stories of Seramas and 407 pages later we are here. I think for the most part, a lot of us still do that and really enjoy the interaction and photos of all the very different (yes, SQ birds too) Seramas on this thread and think like you do - we all can do what we want with our birds. As I said last night, I think the best thing to do now is just to go back to what the OP wanted for this thread and to the fun we were having sharing our birds so this thread doesn't get closed.
